Just got a Model 29 and need some reasonably priced 44 Spcl ammo for plinking. PMC or Winchester Cowboy Loads...these are the cheapest I've found so far, are there any issues with either of these or would someone make a recommendation of there own? thanks

Cheap 44 Special ammo just doesn't happen.
You will usually find full house magnums for less.

Even if you did find some, firing the specials in a magnum means that you will need to be extra diligent in cleaning the charge holes or risk the carbon ring syndrome.

As NAWILSON has suggested, handloading is your best bet.

If you plan on shooting .44's a lot and not handloading, you better have a big bank account.

I've never had any problems with PMC ammo. The Winchester cowboy loads should work just as well.

I think since you don't handload, the brands you've mentioned are fine. There is really good factory ammo out there now. The ammo listed as cowboy action shooting ammo should be fine & it might be loaded lighter than other loads.
I think you will do fine with cowboy action ammo.

For a couple hundered bucks you can get set up to load your own and not get jacked up buying factory made ammo, the bonus is the same same die set will do 44 mags also with no additional equipment.

Thanks for the info. The online ammo I've been looking at is PMC, 50rnds for $22 (jacketed hollow 180gr bullet). The Winchester Cowboy (lead rnd nose) $34 for a box of 50.

Even tho you don't handload, you should save your brass. You can sell it to offset your cost or you may change your mind about handloading. You might also find someone to do it for you or talk to some large ammo remanufacturer about refilling them for you...................

Reloading is a very rewarding hobby all by itself. 44 special is one of the best candidates for reloading since the cost difference between factory and reloaded is so large. It costs around a buck a round in this area for factory and it costs me about 14 cents a round or 7 bucks for a box of 50.

I reload but a few months back I bought some .44 Special Winchester Cowboy loads in the lead flat nose 240 Grain, just to test. After shooting half a box through my Model 24 the gun was filthy and the bore was fouled with lead. They advertise these at 750 fps. but I couldn't get close to that. I shot the rest through an old Bulldog .44 and reused the cases.

This is only my opinion but those Winchester Cowboy loads are not worth half the price they are selling them for.

If you go to "Cheaper Than Dirt" online you'll see BVAC (Bitterroot Valley) 44 Special ammo ---- 240 grain SWC or SWCHP. They use good StarLine brass and the ammo groups just fine. It does around 760 fps in a 4 5/8" barrel.

Also, CCI makes 44 Special ammo in the aluminum cases with 200 grain JHPs on the cheap. They don't call the bullets Gold Dot but they look exactly the same. This does 930 fps in that same gun.

I dislike anything Fiocchi makes.
