At 0745 this morning I was awakened by a horrible sound. I got up and looked out my back window. It sounded like a tree has fallen on my tool shed again. I saw nothing. I'm deep in the country on 10 acres with a 300 meter driveway to the road. I walked out onto the deck and there was a dead calm.

The road is State Route 218 in Virginia. One of the most dangerous roads in the state. It is a lonely, winding two lane road that has many twists and turns.

About 20 mins later I started to hear sirens. Then many more and they were stopping out in front of my house. I walked out and down the driveway. I saw a car on the other side of the road down in the woods, nose down in a tree. A very young Deputy was putting out flairs. Since I have my large field in front I offered to allow traffic to turn around in it.

When I asked what happened, he turned and said "a fellow officer has just been killed." I hung my head and said a short prayer. The Deputy was really shaken and said thank you for praying for him.

It took them hours to get him out and secure the vehicle. The van pulled off with his remains with a police escort. A trooper interviewed me and asked what time I heard the crash. I immediately felt sick as I maybe could have helped him during that 20 mins. He assured me there was nothing I could have done.

The official results are not out but it appears speed and the classic late for work thing is at play. It has made me think in many ways today. Life is short. We hold no guarantee how long it lasts. A family is without a father, son and husband. Worse yet it's the week before Christmas.

It all just seems so senseless. For the individuals on this forum who have ever done this occupation I salute you. It's a thankless job just like the military that can get you killed in a split second.

May God Bless That Deputy On His Way To A Better Place.

Bruce, I am so sorry - there was nothing you could do, your thoughts & prayers are admirable. Hang in there buddy. Rest in peace to a fellow officer.

My dept lost a good cop a few months ago after he got off shift. He was collided with head-on by a UDA with felony convictions who was drunk driving the wrong way. It was a one lane freeway flyover so there was no place to swerve.

All fatal wrecks are terrible, but when the thin blue line gets thinner, it's really hard.

I'm thinking you were blessed today by not going to that scene. Sleeping tonight would have not been good. Very sad to loose another Officer. That's three we have listed here this weekend.

I've got a 23 year old nephew who just started a LEO job in a small Midwestern town. Four kids and a wife. New baby. 30 mile commute. Graveyard shift. First thing I'm gonna tell him when I see him over Christmas is, "be safe behind the wheel". Those guys spend 8 hours a day in the patrol car, driving like crazy sometimes. It's more dangerous than they think.

Geez...another brother lost. RIP, sir. Prayers for family, friends and coworkers.

When I first retired, I used to work with the local Rescue Squad there - we responded to more fatal and near fatal accidents on that road than any other in the county, including U.S. Rt. 301. I forbade my wife and kids to use that road. Very nasty, extremely unforgiving.

Thoughts and prayers for the Deputy and his family.

Edited to add:

As I was driving home, I observed what could only be his brothers escorting him back to Charles County as they went north on Rt. 301 in Md. Some of us realized what it was and pulled off, but the oblivious and unknowing just kept on going.
