I am keeping busy during this time by doing various gun-related things. Today I thought I would take a photo of a couple of my revolvers chambered in .45 Colt. Hope you like the picture.

45 Colt is such a very intriguing caliber to me but I'm told I shouldn't shoot full power out of a S&W.

Any truth to that do you know?

Nice group, DR. I really like the pretty football presentation grips on the 4" blue gun. Did it come with those? If not, where did you find them?

Though not original, they came with the revolver. I really like them.

Well, "full power" technically for .45 Colt is 14,000 PSI. Since these Smiths are also made in .45 ACP, I am not overly concerned with a pressure of 21,000 psi or the .45 ACP +P pressure at 23,000 psi. However, I like to keep my loads below 20K psi...easier on the gun, less tiring, and plenty accurate.

That being said, the standard velocity load of a 255 grain SWC at 900-950 fps is a serious chunk of lead at a decent velocity. A charge of 8.4 grains of Unique seems to do this in the 6" barrel. If I need to up the power into Ruger territory I will use a Ruger, or either a 657 .41 Mag or a 629 .44 Mag.

Under Pressure

Handloader Ammunition Reloading Journal, June 2019,
No. 320, page 44, .45 Cold Standard-Pressure Handloads,
has a very good Article detailing the 45Colt.

History, Revolvers, what Cylinder Chambers/Barrel dimensions
should be, Reloads, and Pressures are written.

Very informative interesting reading.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

I have a great fondness for the .45 Colt cartridge. Unfortunately, Colt style SA revolvers and I just can't seem to get along. :(
Thankfully, S&W has made some wonderful guns in .45 Colt and I have several. :D

The one on the bottom right is actually a 25-2 in .45acp. However, all the others are .45 Colt. ;)

The S&W revolvers will easily handle any standard .45 Colt load. However, the more or less "magunized" Ruger only loads are not recommended as they can cause premature and un-necessary wear on the guns. But the big N-frames can easily slip up into the +P range if you're so inclined.
I've never seen any need to hot rod the .45 Colt. It can handle most anything except the big bears in its standard loadings. ;)

I really like the .45 Colt round and just loaded another 300 today. My 3 S&Ws go through them right quick. Model 25-2 converted to .45 Colt by Andy Horvath, Model 625 with a heavy barrel, and the Model 25 Mountain Gun.

I like N frames in 45 caliber but the majority of mine are ACP. I do have one in 45 long Colt. It has not gotten any range time in quite a while so maybe time to look for a trade.
