I'm looking for something with a detachable magazine and preferable under $200.

This is going to be a beater which will be permenantly kept with the bug-out bag/survival kit I carry in my truck at all times.

I am not looking for a Ruger 10/22. Something smaller and more compact, but will use a detachable magazine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Got a great deal on an AK47-22lr for $219 !!!You may have trouble finding one at that price, but what a cool gun !!! Shoo

I keep a Marlin 25M in my truck. Its a .22 WMR, but I'm sure you could find the .22 LR version for less than two bills. They are well made, accurate, American made guns.

I bought the Savage MK II FVT(?) bolt action rifle. It is incredibly accurate, but it was $300 brand new. To get a decent .22 rifle for $200 or less, I would think that you would have to buy a used one. There are tons of different brands of them at gunshops everywhere for that price. If you want a good accurate rifle that is new, I strongly reccomend the Savage. Great little gun.

The Marlin Pappoose can be taken down. Other than the AR7, it is one of the few take down rifles on the market. Henry - and other makers - AR7s tend to be a bit temperamental.

You can probably get a Mossberg Plinkster or a Savage auto, entry level guns, in your price range. AR7s usually run about 200ish. Not sure what a Pappoose runs, but they aren't terribly cheap.

The 10/22 probably remains the standard by which all other auto loading .22s are judged and also the one for which spare mags will be most readily found.

I've shot a whole bunch of .22s. I've never shot a Papoose but wouldn't have any doubts about it, Marlin makes the best rimfires, period. They also make an 18" barreled non take-down version, the 795 (blued) or 795SS (stainless).

I chose a Marlin 81TS as my beat around Jeep gun. (They are now the model 981T) It isn't as short and uses a tube mag. but it shoots longs and shorts which was a priority for me.

I bought a cheap used 10/22 just for the receiver. Then bought a kit with bull barrel and fibergalss stock. With a 3-9 scope it will stack 10 round in a quarter at 35 yds

There's a new 10/22 with a shorter stock and barrel. I like wheelgunner's advice about the Savage Mark II FV. Problem is, I've had one ordered from Wally World since March 21, so the gun buying frenzy extends all the way to target bolt action .22s.
