This is so simple an idea I am shocked that it is not being done across the Country already.

Every LGS, National Gun Store, Ammo Company's, Holster Company's, Reloading and Component Company's, etc. should offer a 5% across the board discount off your entire order WHEN YOU SHOW A VALID NRA CARD. I think even guys who dislike the Organization for what ever reasons would tend to join up since if they are making a large purchase or just getting into the hobby it would pay for itself rapidly - or even for that one purchase. Signs could be posted and emails sent out about special NRA discounts for Member sonly sales.

I think that when it all comes down to it we are all driven by how we can save money on purchases and I think that this would be a great way for Vendors in the Gun Business to secure their own futures by increasing the NRA Membership. I've said this many times, but like them or not I see no one else on the evening news fighting for our rights!!!!!

I belong to two Gun Clubs and were I President of either one I'd make NRA membership mandatory or at least offer a discount that paid for the membership fee.

What do you think?

Yes, but it will insure they have a profit margin at all in the future. Sometimes Humans have to be lured into doing the right thing - even if it's for themselves.

While LGS may not make big bucks on Firearms (don't really know what they make), I'm sure their mark ups on ammo and accessories are a whole lot better like most business encounter. If they are driven out of business by stricter gun laws and legislation then what will there profits amount to?

May not be the perfect idea, but anybody got a better one that will actually work???

As I recall, our Pima Pistol Club membership discount for NRA members is greater than the cost of a basic NRA annual membership. :)

I get 1% off my entire purchase at Fin Feather Fur by showing my NRA card. Additional 1% off for anyone with military ID.

Or,,,, you could make it a requirement to have an NRA card to purchase anything????. Most ranges around here require NRA membership to join. You can still do daily rental (at what I think is elevated amount) but to join the club, NRA membership is a requirement.

Griffin Gun Club will not even consider your membership application if you are not an NRA member. It's a requirement for membership in the club.

Membership is not the issue. Education is the issue. NRA already requires membership for competition from what I've been told by multiple people.

Not what I meant. I meant the discount on the membership would basically pay for the NRA membership so the membership to NRA would be "free". That said, the NRA would benefit financially and help maintain OUR rights.

Yep! The discount does make an annual NRA membership free, and a little more to encourage other members of the family to become NRA members.

This is Arizona. We support the NRA and FrontSight pretty heavily. There are probably more Lifetime Members than Annual NRA Members in the club. That's just a guess based on the people I know well, not a scientific check of the membership rolls.

While a good idea in theory, making membership mandatory I doubt would work-- might even get you sued in todays world. there are untold millons of firearms owners in this country, yet very few are NRA members -- were they, we might be able to beat the anti's at there own game. The NRA is not perfect, but it is the best we have. Been a member since 1959 when on the high rifle team, but no one is going to tell me I have to belong to any club, church, or anything else. Just the way it is. :)

There was a small time dealer at the gun shows that offered a 10% discount for NRA members. His prices weren't great but I made a point to buy something from him anytime I could.
My gun club required NRA membership too. I don't know they got in any trouble over it either. I dropped out as it was too far a drive and the range was always busy with classes and leagues after normal working hours.
I think a LGS store would do well offering a discount even if only sales tax or some minor percent. Maybe could be limited to certain type of items with a bigger markup.

In most cases the dealer just marks up his merchandise enough to cover the discount. One gun club I belong to tried to make NRA membership mandatory, but there were too many members that weren't shooters and didn't even own a gun, (Sportsman's Association) and they voted it down.

We've had this discussion at my local club many times. Our stand on the subject is, we want more gun enthusiasts. By limiting our membership, we limit the potential to grow our sport. The easier we make it, the more shooters we'll have. In this environment we need all the lawful gun owners we can get.

Membership is not the issue. Education is the issue. NRA already requires membership for competition from what I've been told by multiple people.
This is not true. There may be some competitions that require NRA membership, but the NRA doesn't require it. There are some programs that require membership, but that's the same with any member run organization.

In fact, you don't even need to be a member to be a certified NRA instructor. Your instructor fees are higher, but you don't need to be a member. It's actually one thing I like about the NRA. They understand that some people may not agree with them on certain issues and don't want to join, but they don't limit access to gun training and promotion even if it hurts their own membership.

My primary purpose is to get people to join the NRA to build a War Chest to fight the Anti's - period. Any other good that comes from being an NRA member is icing on the cake. Supposedly there are 60 million + gun owners in the USA and only 4 million NRA members - that's under 7% which is a disgrace IMHO. Just saying.............

NRA was founded in 1871, originally to promote marksmanship training

NRA GOALS:
  • Protect and defend the US Constitution, especially in regard to the second amendment.
  • Promote public safety, law and order, and the national defense.
  • Train members of law enforcement agencies, the Armed Forces, and people of good repute in the safe handling and effective use of firearms.
  • Foster and promote the shooting sports at local, state, regional, national and international levels.
  • Promote hunter safety and proper wildlife management.

In meeting these goals, the NRA also fights for our legal rights. That however, is not their primary purpose.
