A Mismarked 581ND

My dealer called today to say they had a 58-1 and did I want it. Well, I did, but when I got there it wasn't my model 58 grail gun but a 581. So $400 later I am at home and see that it is mismarked 58-1. I see some posts saying it is rare, yada, yada.

So my question, is it special?
What grip were these shipped with, there was no box or papers?

Under the crane, No "M" recall and whats with the large "5"

Ordinarily I would not think so. I've got a few other models mismarked in similar fashion. BUT…..We read you in SCSW it is identified as having very few marked in this way. Hopefully someone will educate us as I too have been wondering about these 68-1 marked guns.

Just a way to re-mark a previously marked frame instead of destroying a perfectly good frame. The only problem with guns marked inside the yoke and on the butt is that you cant see it without a hands on look so nothing really to display for others to see.

I wouldn't say the mismark makes it special. Being a 581 makes it a little special. If it cleans up a little, I bet you could double your money here on the forum.

I've seen a couple, including one I owned. No real added value with the mismarked model number, but you got a bargain at that price. IMO, one of the prettiest guns to ever come out of the factory. This one is a very early "AAA" serial number.

I'm not saying you are wrong but it's worth noting that a Model 58 is an N-frame and a 581 is an L-frame so it would have to be a genuine error rather than just S&W changing their mind about how they wanted to use a frame that had already been marked, at least it seems so in this case.

Mismarked model numbers on revolvers is not all that uncommon with S&W. Does a mismarked model number add any value? Not really. Did you do well to get a Model 581 for $400? In today's world of inflation, you did quite well.

These usually came with modified or PC Magna stocks but could have been ordered with Target stocks. You did well at $400, enjoy!

I have seen a 681 marked 68-1. Probably not all that unusual.

The OP got a good deal on a nice 581. At that price, I certainly wouldn't have cared if it was mismarked.

My 581 is stamped 58-1 also.

I don't consider it rare, just interesting. I've read of at least 4 others marked in this manner. That makes me think the stamp was set up incorrectly and a number of revolvers were processed (Probably on a Monday or a Friday).

I'd buy a clean 581 or 58-1 at $400 all day long and twice on Sundays! Nice grab, shoot it often and enjoy.

Probably the only thing special was the day laborer that did the stamping that day......

If these are "special" and collectible that would have to be the weirdest corner of the S&W collecting world....
