I was served an ice ball in a short tumbler when ordering bourbon on the rocks about 30 years ago. I recall thinking that the ball, which was larger than a golf ball, maybe about the size of a squash ball, was novel, but that the drink was gone mighty quick. I recall thinking the drink was expensive. There weren't any ice options offered. That's the way that particular bar did it.

That was in Tokyo, and I think that's the only time I had an ice ball in a drink.

I think charging different prices for different shapes of ice is a surefire way to antagonize customers, especially if higher prices for ball shapes are not made clear in advance. That the restaurant manager says he's had the conversation with 100 unhappy customers in the past couple of months and that the restaurant still continues doing this nevertheless does not speak well for the restaurant's business acumen.

Nothing to do with alchacol but it is about ice.

Years back in the Albany NY area we went into one of the name brand fast "foods" I ordered my usual large coke no ice. She gave me my order and I thought it seemed a bit high. Checked and they charged me about 50% more for my large coke!

She told me that they do that if no or light ice is specified. No doubt they make much more on frozen water than the drink. She called the manager over and same story from him. After giving him a bit of what was left of my mind he made the order right charge.

We never went back to that place again and coincidence or not they were out of business within a year!:)

Yep, when places get that desperate for money they have to resort to that type of fees, they are already on the way out.

We never buy alcoholic drinks at a restaurant. We drink, but only modestly, and I refuse to pay the enormous markups restaurants have on drinks. When we drink, it is at home. I have noticed that recently the price of mixed drinks at some restaurants is closing in on $10, or is already there. No way, no how.

Not really related, but I saw that McDonald's is removing self service soft drink dispensers. Too many customers are getting refills to go. They will still give refills but you have to walk up to the counter to get it.

I lump all these money grubbing schemes into what I call the "Post-COVID clawback". It's going on in all kinds of industries.

Here in the NE corner of FL, we are seeing a surcharge of up to 3.5% on credit cards charges at restaurants……. This is becoming the norm…….

I got one of them over-sized giant cube silicone ice cube trays. It's in the freezer. I use bottled water. I do my drinking at home. I guess I could pack it in my small cooler and take it with me... BYOI.

Simple solution is when order is being taken. Tell customer their ice options. Not that hard. The deception is the part that makes people angry. Round ice cubes are nothing new. Tupperware sells the trays. I like one of the large ice cubes in my bourbon glass.
