I was just over at the Ruger Forum. There is a rumor going around over there, that Smith and Wesson is now shipping J-Frames without the internal lock; and that they plan to phase the internal locks out completely.

Sounds too good to be true.

If it were true, seems that I'd have heard it multiple places by now.

But I figure that if there is any truth to the rumor at all, someone on this Forum should know about it.

Anyone?

The 442 & 642 are a couple of examples.

I believe the 442 and the 642 both have the internal locks as of 2001 with the -2 model change. S&W did introduce at least one J frame model without the internal lock, but only if the model had the "centennial" style grip safety. Models 40 and 340?...not certain...perhaps someone who's up to speed on current S&W offerings can fill in the blanks.

If the IL is phased out, does that mean in 5 years or so they and their keys will be hot collector items on GB?

I have two S&W's with the lock, a 649 and a MP9C. Since I never, ever, once used the lock I say "What lock? Ignorance is truly bliss. (o;

Well, I have my doubts about this, BUT, I can say that if they did do away with the IL, they'd get some of my money. I kind of like the Night Guard series, and the sole reason I haven't bought one (or more) is...you know.

Could it be that they are only making non IL guns that have a grip safety?

Ohiobuckeye & RonJ;

If you will click the link that I provided to the Smith & Wesson website, you will see what they are advertising.

OK, DAO guns. I still haven't seen a new Smith with an exposed hammer w/o the IL.
I'll be in line when the model 60 is introduced without the IL, or the 619 or 627...or 22.

Interesting. Why doesn't someone call S&W and find out if it is true or not?
