A question to those of you that have had shoulder surgery.

For clay games, move to a gas operated semi-auto. MUCH softer than a 20 guage O/U

Do you download rifle calibers with jacketed bullets or cast lead?

I've been using jacketed Speer and Hornady 'plinker' and spire point bullets to punch paper to 100 yds. I also have a load of light lead bullets I'm going to try soon and if it works out may try some different weights. The 130 grain 'varminter' looks like it would be good, but haven't tried that as it is built for high speed. Besides saving my shoulder, my family loves to shoot them too.

I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder in May of 2012. Prior to the surgery I was not very recoil sensitive. Now I am having problems. I am just getting back into shooting. I purchased a 20 GA Browning OU this spring so I could take up sporting clays. I am a lousy shotgun shot and want to improve my abilities. Unfortunately before I could shoot it I had to have back surgery and was not allowed to shoot until last month. It now hurts to shoot my .308 and last week I shot sporting clays for the first time and my shoulder is very sore. Last year I switched from a 3" 12 GA to a 3" 20 GA for duck hunting and it helped.

My question to those of you that have had shoulder surgery and found it difficult to shoot a long arm after is there anything you tried that helped. Waterfowl season starts in 2 weeks and I do not want to have to set it out.

My surgeon told me in 1996 that my shoulder would never be 100% again. What helped me the most was switching to a gas operated semi auto shotgun (I shoot a 12 ga. with mostly target loads). I traded my O/U 20 ga off and have not looked back.

I shot another 50 rounds from my 20GA OU today but this time I used the Past Super Mag Plus recoil pad that I got in the mail yesterday. That made all of the difference. There are no bruises on my shoulder and it is feeling fine. I also hit a lot more clay birds. I still have a lot of room for improvement though.

After my m/c accident my left shoulder blade was broken. But is was a straight cut, so they didn't do any surgery. But I remember the pain. Whatever you do be careful and don't over do you shoulder. Good luck.
