A Quick ReCheck Of My Rifle Setup

Had a lot going on last year, and haven't reloaded in a long while. Especially with supply issues, but we all know about that.

Last thing I had setup was for 308 hunting rounds, namely the Sierra 165 grain Game King boat tail. I use all NATO brass, CCI large rifle primers, and IMR 4895 powder.

My notes from the last time were lost during some shuffling of things, and all I have left to determine where my powder load was is the balance beam as well as my RCBS powder drop. First throw matched the balance beam, 42.5 grains. Tried one case with a bullet, and the OAL from the bullet seating die left in the press matched the hunting rounds I have from the last session.

But, erring severely on the side of caution, I checked my books and Hogdgon's reloading webpage, and what my Lyman 49th reads concerned me that perhaps such a load, with NATO brass, might be hot for my battle rifles.

I hope it isn't a stupid question, but I'd dare probe the forum's opinion in wither I made a mistake before, or am making a mistake now if I continue with the setup "as is". Is it potentially too hot for an M1a or other battle rifle, or am I worrying sick about nothing?

Why not test a few loads at 41 and 41.5 grains with the H 4895 powder before going all the way with your 42.5 grain load? I think that I'd do that with your M1A. No need to stress your rifle unnecessarily.

Our standard match load for the M14 and M1A rifles back in the 80s and 90s was 41.5 grains of H4895 in GI Match cases and the 168 grain Sierra MK bullet.

I'm running IMR 4895. I just used the Hogdgon website.

I'm only tempted to keep the same powder load is if that's what I used last time, to match rounds I've previously loaded. But, on retrospect, that is also not a good excuse.

Yes, I suppose I should just take it down a notch.

The .30 cal 165-168 gr bullet for hunting can be dropped all the way down to 2530fps.......

and it will still have at 300 yards, 1,796 ft/lbs of energy..........
more than enough for any size deed that I have ever seen, with a well placed shot.

Tight groups.
