What S&W pistol would be the equivalent to the SIG p320 or M17/M18? Wanting a new pistol to add to the collection but want to stay with a S&W.

What do you mean by "equivalent?"

Similar size, caliber controls, etc? Or something you might have issues with or a major recall?

Not trying to be a joker here, just wondering if you've heard about the problems the 320's are having. Police departments getting rid of them, training outfits no longer allowing them in classes, police getting shot in the leg while carrying them in their duty holster, etc.

If you're looking for a pistol with no thumb safeties a full size (4&1/4" 9MM) should do it for you. If you want one like the military version then S&W makes both 4&1/4" barreled models (17 rounds in the magazine) and 4" barreled models (15 rounds in the magazine) with thumb safeties and FDE frame and slide color.

You can go to the S&W website and look at the different models to see which one you think you'd like the best.

I'll pass on the problems they are having with them going off without a hand on the gun, and take this at face value.

For my money the closest thing to an M17 (which has a thumb safety) in the S&W lineup is the M&P with a thumb safety. I have three of them in .40 S&W and .45 (I do have a 9mm barrel for my .40 and it works OK but if I was to consider carry it, I'd want to get an M&P in 9mm but that would be unlikely - carrying a 9mm that is ;) )

Close to the 320 (without a thumb safety) would expand to the Sigma, the SD9 and the M&P wihtout a thumb safety (they come both ways but the Sigma and SD9 only come sans-safety - I'm not sure they even make them any more but there are plenty of used ones. Be aware they take different mags (I think the SD9 and Sigma may be the same?)

Thanks! That's all I carry is 9mm pretty much, sometimed the .380 bodyguard depending on my dress code situation. Been carrying the shield plus since it came out with the 15rnd mag. A regular shield before that. Even shot some competitions with the plus with success. Looking for a bit bigger though at this point. Funny thing about the SIG problem is, no one has been able to demonstrate why they went off. Seems like a 3rd party would have figured it out by now. Meh... Like I said I'm a S&W fan so I would like to stick with the brand just because of that mainly, good bad or silly, I just like s&w.
