"A Sense of Evil"

I’ve thought and thought about it all day and I still can’t come up with anyone that I’ve ever met that radiated evil but I do remember an abandoned house I went to in Pearland Texas that did. I went at night with a friend looking for someone and when we got up to the house we both felt it and we both said I am not going in there at roughly the same time.

I also remember looking at some pictures of Lincoln New Mexico that just looked evil and I never could understand why.

From the summer of 1961 to the summer of '63 I worked the midnight-to 5 a.m. shift in a radio station and went to college during the day. The broadcast studio was in an old house on the north side of town. The house probably dated to the 'Twenties, but by the 'Sixties the area was classified as "light industrial." Lots of small shops and manufacturing facilities, busy during the day but deserted at night.

When the night man left at midnight I locked both doors and checked all the windows to make sure they were locked, too. Then I locked the door to the control room. The final line of defense was a 1911 in a holster screwed to the underside of the console where I sat. I had been shooting since the age of six or so and had fired a 1911, so I felt pretty safe. Except for...

Three times during the two years I worked that job I got a sudden and strong feeling that, to co-opt the title of the Ray Bradbury novel, something wicked this way comes. Other posters to this thread have mentioned a profound silence. That's what I experienced. There weren't things going "bump" in the night. Conversely, things were so quiet I could hear the soft hiss of the needle on the record and the thudding of my heart, which had suddenly jumped from my normal 50 beats per minute to 100 or more. At the same time, I began to tingle all over. Years later a doctor friend told me that was my system being flooded with adrenaline.

All three times I took the .45 out of its holster and made the rounds of the control room. The window in the outside wall had been sealed up when the soundproofing was put in, but the wall on the hall and the wall between the control room and the room next door were glass--not bulletproof but three-quarter inch laminated glass for soundproofing. It would have been hard to break thru.

Nothing ever happened. No visits from lions, tigers, bears, ghosts, or zombies. After half an hour or so the feeling went away as quickly as it had come. I asked the night man, who worked 7 p.m. to midnight, if he had ever experienced anything like that. He said no, but the look he gave me said otherwise.

One final comment here. When you're a shooter, comfortable with guns and confident of your ability to shoot them, it's amazing how much better you feel at times like that when you have a gun in your hand.

This is rough when...

Hey jimmyj, the keyword in your experience is " semi-conscious". That all has to do with REM sleep my friend - we are basically paralyzed when we are in REM sleep, its a safety mechanism in our brain to keep us from hurting ourselves while we sleep. You came into a semi-conscious state but your brain was lagging behind thus not allowing you to move. Once it caught back up with you, movement was allowed again. I'll bet it was pretty scary though! There's a medical term for it but it slips my mind right now but you're good to go!

This is rough when you have severe obstructive sleep apnea. You wake up and realize you can't breathe, but you can't move. It's scary as hell.

The "priest" is wearing black sclera contact lenses.

The cassock collar doesn't appear to fit correctly.

Makes me think this was some sort of costume party where the photo was taken.

Doesn't mean that the guy wearing it wasn't a creep (I would never wear the garment of a religious faction as a "joke"), but anybody who thinks the eyes are his natural condition is pretty gullible.

I've met people who were inexplicably driven to do evil things. It always seemed that something had overcome them. To me the difference between bad acts, and evil is patent. To others, the discernment seems much less acute, or absent altogether.

Pledge to God to what is good and righteous, no matter the personal cost, and you will never be at a disadvantage to evil.

My wife and I like to tour the Civil War battlefields around the state. She's a yankee, and when she moved here, the only thing she knew at all about "the war" was "There was a war, we won." So she's not really a "buff" at all, but is interested in learning.

We drove out toward Apppmattox one bright, sunny, spring day, and took the turn off to visit the Saylors Creek battlefield. We got out of the car, and walked toward the house there. Suddenly she started to cry. I mean, big, gut wrenching, sobs. She was almost hysterical. "What happened here?" she asked. "Something really BAD happened here."

I started to tell her the story of the battle, how the Federals cut into the retreating Confederates, and cut them to ribbons. Hundreds killed on both sides, thousands taken prisoner, and the last real hope of the Confederacy died.

She stopped me..."We have got to go! I cannot stay here! This is the saddest place I have ever been in my life." as tears rolled down her cheeks.

We got back in the car, and drove back down the road. In a half mile, maybe a mile, she was back to normal. She apologized saying she had no idea what had come over her, but she just knew that she had to leave. I can't get her to go back to this day.

Wow this is a great thread.

I'll share a recent experience I had back in November. One evening I was out hunting and it started to get dark. I was hunting on private land and my quarry was either an axis deer or a feral hog (both of which are legal to hunt after dark). I settled down in a good spot at the base of an oak where I could look out over a field and proceeded to screw my hunting light mount onto my rifle. I waited for an hour or so and by now it was dark. My eyes had adjusted and I was starting to make out shapes and shadows that I assumed to be a small heard of axis deer coming into the field about 100yards away. I started looking at the shapes thru my scope trying to select a potential target before flipping on the spot light. All of a sudden the place went deathly quiet. No sound at all. Just like the woods will go quiet when the birds and squirrels realize you are there. Only problem is my presence was not the reason for the silence. The hair on my neck stood up and I couldn't help but feel or sense that something or some one was behind me. I tried squirming around to look or hear, but that chilling silence continued. Finally after what seemed like an eternity but might have only been a minute I decided to leave. I am familiar with that land and have hunted it before many times in the dark but this time it was different. I hightailed it back to my truck about a 1/4 mile away. The hair on my neck stayed up until I was in the truck with the doors locked and the engine running. A few days latter in a passing conversation a neighbor rancher told me about his nephew spotting a mountain lion (very rare in our parts but not unheard of) the same evening about a mile from and a few hours before I was running back to my truck. Not sure if a mountain lion was what got my nerves up, but I know I was not the only predator in the woods that night.

Only comment I can offer at this time is 'don't read threads like this before bedtime!"

Pleasant dreams ya'all.

When I was 15 I was very active in my local church. I would share the gospel every day with my friends at school. One night my friends and I went to Portland to pass out some invitations for a church meeting. That Thursday morning a verse hit me hard and became my verse for the day "the fear of man bringeth a snare but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe" I did not know why that morning but I knew I needed that verse and I clung to it all day. We got to portand and my two friends went off together and I went by myself, this was not the nicest part of Portland but something was different I felt a dark presence but I remembered my verse for the day. I walked up to the first door and I could see the man walking up to the door he rips the door open and yells at me "hey how ya doin" he was trying to freak me out but I did not budge, as it turned out he thought I was mormon and he was going to mess with me (im Christian) he turned out to be a cool guy and then he says "watch out for next door they make twisted sister look like nothing". I went next door and there were people everywhere it looked like the aftermath of some heavy metal rock party. I have talked to more than 10,000 about the gospel I am not into spooky stuff, but there was an evil spirit here. I could tell if I let my fear go it would get the best of me. I remembered my verse "the fear of man bringeth a snare but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe" I knocked on the door and invited them to church two of the people stormed off but one let me talk to him. I knew something was going on but I did not know what,I the fear was there beyond the norm for regular human interaction. I focused on this person for about 15.min and then we were done. I walked accross the street and down maybe 30 feet and walked up to my friends truck. Mark and Don were waiting for me in the truck. Mark opened the door and I could tell they were deeply concerned about something it looked they had been praying and almost in tears. Don said "are you ok" and I said yes I'm fine what's up? Don said "did you see him?" I said no. Don said "we came walking down the street and we saw a guy accross the street with a gun pointed right at you I don't know what type of gun it was but it was a big one. I asked him what he was doing and he said leave me alone I'm going to shoot him" The man then threatened Don and Mark and then confirmed he was going to shoot and kill me again. There was something dark and evil there I could not see it but I could feel it and it was confirmed at the end of the night. Gods word is true his promises are real I know "the fear of man bringeth a snare but who's putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe" my faith is not in a 629. My faith for salvation for eternity and life is in the Lord. May you all have this peace.

I'm surprised that after all this time and all these posts that no old Army infantryman has thrown in with the conversation. So here you are:

When I was a teenager on my senior trip to SE Asia in 1967, new 11B's are taught to walk point with a more experienced guy in that endeavor.

There were all manner of perils in that job and one had to learn to listen to the "bell" if that person ever wanted to make it to being an old guy. This was before the popular "Spidey sense" but it is the same thing. It is truly amazing what can be learned if one is really paying attention.

The posters that mentioned things going quiet in these types of episodes are right. At that stage of hyper-vigilance, the body tunes out the things that are not necessary such as hearing stuff on the periphery. People develop tunnel vision and have exaggerated sensory perception in some areas and none in others. An example would be a person claiming not to have heard his/her weapon fire in a gun fight or claiming that their ears did not ring after firing a weapon in a confined area.

Spooky stuff indeed.

Been a while since the last post, been almost three years since the first.

It's time to resurrect the thread and hope that we have some new stories to be shared.

Thanks to all previous input. It has been very interesting read.

Infrasonic.....

Infrasonic sounds are said to foster a feeling of dread. They use them in movies to make the audience on edge. It may be what triggers animals to get nervous when we can't hear anything.

PS: I don't see evil in a person, but when they start to talk.......

Time To Resurrect This Old Thread

Been almost two years since the last post. Nearly five since it began.

If you have never seen it before there are some great post by members.

Maybe some new stories will come about.

Just thought I would bring this thread back around once again. I and many others have really enjoyed the stories. Hoping for some more!

Does anyone have a "Sense of Evil" experience to add?

I have only had that sensation a few times but one was unforgettable. I posted this, in a different thread, a while back:

" In 2000 I was close to closing the shop as it was almost 2100hrs. As I mostly wore cargo shorts, I would shove a pistol in my pocket after opening and then go about my day.

As I was ringing up the last customer, two hoodies came in. One stayed close to the door while the other moved to one of the stomp box display cases and kept nervously glancing my way.

My spidey sense was tingling. The one by the front held the door for the exiting customer. I really can't explain why, but I slid my hand into my pocket and wrapped it around my Bersa Thunder 380.

Hoodie #2 turned, faced me and moved his left hand down and began to pull up his shirt. I didn't wait. I leveled my gun at his head and they both bolted for the door.

The police found them later and hopefully they are still in the system."

It is one of those Steve Austin slo-mo scenes that is burned into my ROM.

I've been disturbed by the look in the eyes of more than 1 person in the interview room. Yes, some are & cannot hide the evil inside them.

I've also listened to the voice in my head>>>>>

Leaving the jail with a rookie in his 1st week. Another unit calls out with a suspicious vehicle. There was no concern in his voice, but HQTRS did ask if he wanted a back-up & he accepted. I was already rolling that way. "Something" told me to get over there at about the same time HQTRS started asking him if he wanted another unit. I've never been known for driving fast & running code in those days was frowned on. But everyone realized I was on scene in a very short time. The officer wasn't visible, but I soon saw a flashlight on the ground between a couple of houses. I found the officer & suspect rolling on the ground fighting for possession of the officer's gun, & the bad guy was winning. I was able to intervene & only the bad guy had to go to the ER.

The rookie was afraid he'd missed some radio traffic; HQTRS even played the tape back to see if there was anything particular that clued me in. All I know is I heard a voice say "Get over there" & I did.

Dang I read all 4 pages. Great Thread.
I once had the opposite of the heightened awareness thing that started this thread.
When I was 9 or 10 my buddy and I thought it would be fun to grab my dads bow and some broad head hunting arrows. We went to the land that surrounded the drive-in theater a block away.
After launching arrows at stuff I walked perhaps 60 yards away to find an arrow we had shot into the air. I picked up the arrow and looked in the direction of my buddy. I heard him yell something at me.
I looked into the air and saw the faint sight of a arrow on a big arc heading my way. That's when the odd part started. I was frozen in place, I did not move an inch. It was like 1 second was 20 min. I saw this arrow come in at such detail and in such slow motion it could have made Pixar jealous. I remained frozen in place and the arrow went right in between my elbow and torso without even the slightest contact. I looked behind me and the arrow was neatly stuck in the ground. Never heard a sound or moved an inch. Clearly the stoppage of time thing stuck with me.

I was deer hunting many years ago and had a experience in which I felt the Presence of God so strong that I still think of it sometimes now. I was a Christian then, and now, so the Presence of God was not a strange thing. No one around but me, and this feeling came over me, not a foreboding or bad feeling, just a powerful Presence. I will never forget it.

Have a blessed day,

Leon
