One of the 20 signs of a hard winter is an abundance of acorns.

Here in southern Oregon we must be in for a doozie. The acorns are real thick this year. I've been smelling autumn in the early morning for about a week now, this morning it was down to 49 degrees.

Fall is falling early.

Same up here in Maine. Last week I noticed a bunch of leaves had already started to cover my lawn. Natures reminder that I need to get the last of my 5-6 cord of wood in my basement.

If that's true we are in for a bad one again. The squirrels have been working non-stop on the white oak next to my house. Acorns and pieces are dropping on the deck and roof from sun up to a little past dark every day the past few weeks.

Last winter in the Massachusetts seacoast area was the mildest I have ever seen in 66 years. So I am getting my shovels waxed, and preparing what I think is going to replace last winter.:(

Does it mention hickory nuts?
Our yard is covered with them - WAY more than I've ever seen...

Not much signs of Fall in the air yet here in Kentucky. We do have an abundance of acorns and hickory nuts.

Well if a bad (cold) Winter helps control the Mosquito's here in the NE, let it snow! This Summer has been the worst I ever remember. I have been spraying myself down just to BBQ a steak. There was NEVER a mosquito problem quite this bad as far back as I can recall and hope we never have another one like it.

Leaves are falling here like it was fall, but in this case it's stress from lack of moisture.

Nope. It says nothing about hickory nuts, but I imagine it's the same idea.

This time last year I recall asking "what happened to the acorns?" there were none, and this past winter was a real mild one.

Going to chop an extra cord or two this season.
