Lidl and Aldi, a couple of German supermarket chains with more than ten thousand stores each, have come to our town. Dropped in at Lidl this morning to check it out.

The concept seems to be that most products are no-name brand and displayed in the shipping box, like Costco. It is less than half the size of the local supermarkets, with an eclectic selection of non-food items also(Ex; Sewing Machines).

I really liked the prices of milk and eggs.

Both came into our area a few months ago and got some immediate attention. Since then their sales have steadily declined and I don't see much of future for either one.

Wow, those are amazing prices. I have a COTSCO membership and take advantage of their great prices and handle the volume with a freezer. But to be able to buy a dozen eggs at that price would, make me feel like Fox. I am told by the docs that visits my backyard that foxes feel good about themselves. He seems to have a preference for big fat squirrels rather than eggs. Of course there are no chickens in the neighborhood.

Well if the chain comes here I will brush up on my HS German in case they do not put up English signs.

We have an Aldi's near me, but not as close as my regular grocery store. I go there once a month or so to get a few odds and ends, but don't shop there regularly. Their take and bake pizzas are a heck of a bargain, that's for sure!

Wife won't shop at our local Aldi as she had a bad experience there and refuses to shop there again .. Several of their stores have closed in the area near me ..

My wife likes Costco where the brands are name brands not ones you haven't heard of for the same price or cheaper .. and the local grocery stores have a much larger and varied fresh food sections and are much larger over all then the Aldi store which is quite small for a grocery store in the area ..

We don't have Aldi here, but we do have Trader Joe's, which is the same company. Excellent store, with some interesting stuff. Not a discount place per se.

Legend has it that the Albrecht brothers had a disagreement about selling tobacco so they split up and divided the business. One brother ran Aldi and the other Trader Joes. Aldi stands for Albrecht Discount.

Personally I love the size of the stores. I don't want to deal with 40 brands/sizes of ketchup or cover 5 acres to buy a cart of groceries and, having been an Aldi shopper for well over 10 years, I've found that their store brand is usually as good or better than premium brands. Kinda like the old saying 'beware the man with only one gun. He probably knows how to use it'. If you are only carrying one bottle of ketchup/whatever it had better be good. They have a guarantee that's hard to beat. If you are not happy they will replace the product and return your money. I've never needed to use it.

Any ice cream lovers should try their super premium ice cream. Only has 5 ingredients; cream, skim milk, sugar, egg yolks and vanilla extract or cocoa. Only comes in chocolate or vanilla. I'm particularly fond of vanilla and Aldi brand beats Hagan Daz, Blue Bell or any other store brand I've ever tasted. 48 oz carton $3.89. Good Stuff!
