Acquired another S&W 57 (this is #5)

#5 .41 magnum, but #3 model 57. Not a raving beauty, but at a dirt cheap price. No end shake, the cylinder rocks a bit on every chamber, TT, TH, RR, tacky stocks from Hades, without box or papers. I think it has been bloodied at some point, looking at the finish. Clean bore and chambers. I hope to shoot it this weekend. The serial number gives it a 1975-1976 DOB.

If it is sunny here tomorrow I will take better photos of this 57. My son was fondling this one and put it back, as it was too cosmetically challenged for his tastes. I looked it over and asked for the best Christmas price, and bought it. I like the .41 magnum cartridge.

I understand completely. If I had found a screwdriver in the truck on the way home, those stocks would be lying in the weeds alongside Hwy. 441 in Rabun county, GA.

A 4in 57 is all I'm missing in my S&W .41 family. I can't find one to save my life!

Are those grips plastic, horn, or composite? I don't think they are great on the 57, but if they're not plastic I could see them on a Heavy Duty or a 58...

Nice find! M57s, in the 4" version, seem to be a little scarce. I have not seen one in any condition in a while. Congrats!

Those grips look like the type Elmer Keith preferred on his 44 Magnums. The steer's head is designed to fill the palm when you grip the revolver to help control recoil. His were made of ivory.

Great find! I love "used guns", as a matter of fact I don't own any new ones. I have a .44 that that came home yesterday it is so used that the "gunsmith" sent it back completely disassembled in a box stating he was an armorer not a gunsmith??? My challenge is to put it all back together, it was a working gun. Let us know how it shoots, I only have two .41s, a 57 and a 58, both with 4" barrels. Enjoy your Christmas.

I gotta say... I like the grips. Even assuming they're plastic, they don't look bad. I like the western look on N frames. Would love to have those in ivory or MOP; even composite. Or just love to have those. ; ) They're what happens when Jay Scott sits around the campfire.

I got a few photos of the S&W 57. I am no expert, but I believe the stocks are mammoth tusks. Any opinions? Did I get taken?

I found some Hogue rubber and installed them. Not my favorite, but they were $22.00 and the only ones I could find near home. I also tried to get better shots of what I think is blood damage to the blue finish.

First thing you wanna do is just clean it up real well. You may find you can live with the finish as is. Bet it shoots great. I love my 57. Pretty sure it's the most accurate revolver I own. It shoots my cast 210 gr swc's really sweet... enjoy Mike

Great find! I'm part of your problem with them 4" barrels as I'm up to 3, 2 blued and 1 in nickel. If I owned your 57 I would have it refinished, but thats just me.

From my experiences with the round I truly believe it's one of the most accurate rounds going. When I bring out my 4" 57 for bowling pin matches I usually do well, even with the lighter reloads. They ALWAYS go down with one hit. In an earlier post I stated that I shot a six point Sitka Whitetail from 130 paces and it was a one shot kill. Knew and heard the bullet hit him right where I was aiming. Little meat damage thanks to a hard cast SWC.

You got a great deal on that baby and I hope you enjoy it as much as I love my .41's!
