First off let me say hello to everyone. First post on the long gun forum so here goes. I've had a M&P 15 Sport for a while with a Redfield 2x7x33 mounted on a Burris PERP. Works great For my aging eyes but I would like to add a Burris FastFireII for up close shooting. I mainly tear up a lot of paper from 50 to 75 yards thus the scope. I thought maybe the red dot would be fun from 50 on in. Where to mount is another matter. On top of the scope or 45 off the side. Will there be enough adjustment on top? Or am I just wasting my money?

Usually, a scope and a red dot would be used separately. Two QR mounts would make this more practical.

The alternative solution would be a 1-4 pwr. scope like Nikon's M223.

I've reviewed a few threads on this over the past few months. I don't have any links but from what I've gathered, if you are ok with shooting offset at 45 degrees, that's the way to go. For closer range shooting, I would want my optic as close to the barrel as possible. The higher the optic (further from the barrel) the greater the difference in POI shift within a short range distance.

Well I haven't decided yet what I want to do with my new Sport, I have for a long time had the 45 degree offset on my 15-22 and really like it. Everybody else that has shot it also thinks it is the perfect solution. I have a 4x scope up top and a red dot at about the 10 o'clock position. It is surprising how easy it is to tilt the rifle a little to shoot the red dot. I will see if I can get a picture later.

I was skeptical with the 45 degree offset until I mounted a set of Magpul MBUS on a set of 45 degree offset mounts. It really works! The key is I can maintain a good cheekweld while rotating the rifle to use the sights. A red dot would work the same I imagine. I wanted something that didn't have a chance of failure in case the scope was broken. I used to have my MBUS mounted under the optics but I didn't like the idea of having to remove the scope, then flip up the sights, etc.

The 45 degree mount allows me to quickly change from scope to irons. I see alot of 3 gunners use this method and it works great for them.

You could also get a red dot and a flip to the side magnafire (sp?). Such as the Lucid.

Spot on right there. For what you're talking about, a 45 degree mount is the way to go. If you've ever seen Jerry Mitchilek (sp?) operate his AR in a 3 gun competition it's insane how fast he transitions back and forth.

Just maintain that cheekweld and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for all the comebacks everyone. I have 45 that I bought for my 15-22 but never got around to using. I guess if I don't like it I can use the reddot on another on of my rifles.
