Adopt A Soldier

I see on here a lot of Veterans... I don't know if there was a program like this when you served, but My Mom is a Veteran and the past few years we have adopted Soldiers and send care packages. If your interested go to Adopt A US Soldier If you request it they will give you the info from a Soldier from your state... along with what the soldier would like to receive while overseas. The Post Office also has flat rate boxes you can use to ship said items. Most of the Soldiers we have adopted don't have family to send them things or can't afford to send things often... I've had friends who severed and when they were overseas we would send extra stuff to share with the guys in their Unit. So I thought I'd share and maybe someone will help a Soldier who is serving now. Oh... and most will e-mail back and forth with you too, which some like because it's someone to talk to back home.... That is a great thing to do. It was nice to get care packages from people when I was in Iraq. I have friends that are deployed right now and I send them stuff all of the time. When they come home and I go to Afghanistan next year they will repay the favor.

If you want I can send you my e-mail addy and when you go back next year... Mom and I can add ya to the send list! The last 2 years on the Holidays we bake home made cookies and send them! I have a friend who just made it to Afghanistan and said he can't wait for the home made cookies! We often send extras so the Soldiers we send stuff to can share! My first Soldier's CO loved it when he got packages from me! lol cause he knew there'd be treats in there for him too! lol

Having received care packages from total strangers (and seeing others get them as well), I can tell you they truly are appreciated. I remember one of my buddies nearly jumping for joy because he received some Ramen soup packets! I'm sure we've all gotten a package that we weren't expecting at one time... imagine how great it feels being so far from friends and family.

I remember being up in Thule, Greenland in 1961. The Wives Club at NORAD made cupcakes for us. They were beautiful, with each one having the frosting put on by hand in a different pattern. Unfortunately they had sat somewhere betwen Colorado Springs and Thule for several months and they were as hard as bowling balls when we got them, Quite inedible. But we thanked the ladies anyway.

A couple times a year I send to troops deployed from here in AZ, if you visit the site's I mentioned above. You can find out units from your area and send them what ever you like. Troops in afghanistan like to get socks and underwear,especially the ones in FOB in the hills. Food items like poptarts and canned goods from the 99 cent store are always good. It's pretty cool when they take the time to write you back,Usually on the back of a mre box. Either way it shows them we as Americans do care about them. So I go with out 5 less pizzas a year and make a Marine or soldier happy.AAA Batteries are top on the list as well too.
