Dry fire the heck out of it, you won't hurt it. Try to learn to hold the sights steady on target while dry firing. Max amount of rounds to shoot depends on your bank balance (or maybe the inventory where you buy ammo).

bank balance is fine (would have been better if Uncle Sam's sticky fingers didn't just take 45% of my bonus), I guess amount of ammo I can buy may be a problem. There is a gun show coming up my way, might need to stock up on a couple thousand rounds of .38 special and 357. Is there a point where you can "over shoot" a gun?

I guess there is one with full auto firearms, but I don't think you'll ever reach it with a revolver.

Guns wear with use, they are machines after all. When they start showing signs of wear (poor timing in particular), you do what you do to any other machine: you get it fixed and start all over.

Don't sweat it.

In theory anything can be worn out, but I doubt you will ever wear out a 686. The amount of ammo it would take to wear it out would cost many times what you paid for the gun, so if you can afford to wear it out by shooting it, you can afford to buy another 686. Just enjoy trying to wear it out.

I have an old 586 no dash that I've TRIED to wear out, no chance, I think my arm will fall off first ... I plan on putting several thousand rounds through it again this summer.

You may already know this, but since it is your first gun I would add: Get some hearing protection and use it every time you shoot! Maybe you won't end up deaf like most of us.

When the barrel bore is worn smooth.

what did he say, speak up, I can't hear you. Oh hearing protection get some with a 29 DB rating.
And wear good earplugs under those.

any recs for hearing protection. I usually just rent the stuff the range provides.
Muffs over earplugs is your best bet to not end up with hearing loss and tinnitus.... like the rest of us old foggies.

+1

I got a Wolff spring kit for my new 686.
Then I cleaned and smoothed all the shiny places in the internals.

Wow! It was great before, it's stupendous now.

I imagine that if I put 2000 rounds through it, it MIGHT feel this good, but I doubt it.

Double action is like buttah! Single is a non-event. Can't get it away from my wife now at the range.
