Ok, I have two 500's so I'm thinking I will scope my 8 3/8 inch model.

My question is about mounting options. I'm going to use 3-4 vertical split rings but what's the best mount to use? I'm leaning towards this one

Anybody have any experience with it? Is there better options out there?

And what about a scope, silver of course but fixed or variable? Is Burris any good? I'd like a Leupold but not sure I can swing the expense. I was looking at this one but its at the top of my price range.. any good? will it hold up to the 500's?

Buy once cry once.
Leupold is the way to go- I have 5 of them on my X-frames.

I originally was just using 2 rings but have moved to using 3 to prevent scope creep.

Typical as below- sorry for the fuzzy photo

I'll be the contrarian here. If you plan to hunt with it and use a rest of some sort, a scope is a great idea. If you mostly plink as I do with my .500s, then a scope, is to me, a source of frustration. Even more weight out in your hands and any scope with magnification accentuates your perception of wobbles. I agree with DonD - I have tried to like scoped handguns and have scoped many but it just does not work for me and they are a bear to carry, can't shoot without a rest, eye relief is critical and sight picture wiggles all over the place. For the practical range you would be shooting hunting or target, just practice with the open sights... and be happy you saved the bucks!

Jack weigand combat mount

Google weigand x frame mounts, and look at them before you buy.
Mine is the older version mount, but it's rock solid.

My old eyes are not that great at distance, and I've hunted with scoped contenders for years so I understand the drill. I'm wanting some accuracy at the 100-150 ish ranges.

And I'll still have my 6.5 inch with the iron sights for the shorter stuff.

I'll have a look at the weigand mount, thanks.

AO...l just got an XVR 460M PC170262. 10 1/2'' barrel w/brake...This thing weights 83 OZ...Thats over 5 pounds...l dont think a few ounces for a scope will make much difference... Right now l have a LEUPOLD 4X EER on it.. Two steel rings...After 70rds thru it l have not noticed any scope movement.. 0nly 2 rings tho..But they are Steel rings..l feel aluminum rigs would soon fail on an X Frame..As to magnification l just picked up a 2xLEUP EER....l think l may like the 2x better..l was just sitting on the front porch adjusting the scope's focus on my neighbor's license plate.(scope only) l could read it about as well as l could with the 4x EER before mounting it on the gun..

Back to scopes..l looked thru several scopes before deciding on Leupold..l decided against a variable because it was too difficult for ME to acquire the target..Try them out before you buy..

ps.l bought BOTH for about half the price of new ones off the net..Both are used...But they are LEUPOLD.. Guaranteed for Life.. Whats not to like about Leupold or S&W??

I'm new to scoping handguns. I have a 10.5 inch .500 you show in your pic and want to find a scope for it.

What model Leupold do you have on gun in picture?

Hog hunting and general fun shooting is what I will do with it.

When you scope that large a caliber, don't skimp on the scope or rings. And, make sure the manufacturer will warranty it when shot on a 500. Leupold will withstand the recoil, I wouldn't vouch for others.

Mines "OK" with the scope but I do have to have a cleaning cloth for the front lens if shooting too much.

I like yours and ruggyh scope mounted close to top of gun/rail. Looks better, more compact.

I have seen some pics of scopes mounted approx an inch off of gun/rail. One appeared so high with a semi double ring that you could possibly use iron sights under the scope up close or as a BUIS.

Is the so called high mounting of scope common and user friendly or is the close to rail mounting in the pics above the way to go?

Bad pic but you get the idea of high rings.
See the semi double ring under scope?

Anybody try rings like this?
Gun in video appears to be 10.5 .500.

What rings are those? I ordered 2 pair of the Leupold rifleman vertical split rings. All I could find anywhere had the one screw in the bottoms, yours have 2.. I could not find any like that anywhere!

A scoped revolver is a different animal from iron sights.
If one is hunting relatively "tame" animals, a long-barreled, scoped, X-frame makes sense, and it can be deployed using a support staff to handle the weight and make aiming easy.
If one is "hunting" Kodiak bear then a 4" M-500 makes MORE sense as a backup handgun. If one loses sight of an Alaskan brown bear in the scrub, chances are when it reappears it will be within 20 meters coming at a full "gallop." Don't want no scoped .500 in that circumstance!

AO---Those look like 'Warne' rings with the double screws...They also make some with levers that are ''QD''....Also consider ring positioning...lf you are going to use more than 2 rings the third goes to the front..lt takes 80% of the recoil...

btw ..The Leupold 4x l got for my 460 was used and came with single screw rings...l will be getting a set of Warnes in the future if l experience any loosening. The extra screw would really help as l dont care for LocTite.. l know Midway carries Warne

Fixed power Leupold for light weight & durability. QD rings / mounts that I can take the scope off or run with optics in an instant if I want.
