Advise - Looking at Zero turn Mowers

Go big or go home!

For the last 16 years I had a Grasshopper 725 w/ a gas Kubota engine. It had nearly 1,800 hours on it when I sold it and treated myself to a new Grasshopper 725 DT which has the 3 cylinder diesel engine.

Grasshopper Mower

This mower is lots quieter and the fuel burn is probably 35% less than the gas mower. The good stuff? A 72" deck w/ electric power fold. No more floor jack and jack stands to lube the deck or scrape the underside.

I mow 5 acres every week (or more often) and it takes about 3 1/2 hours. If I don't drink beer, it takes a little less than 3 hours. They have an air seat option that takes all the pounding away from the ride and is well worth the money.

Cheap? No, but I think it is the greatest thing out there. Oh, yeah, it comes w/ a built in beer can holder!

All good recommendations.

But nothing in a zero turn tops a Scag in my opinion. For reliablity and for durability I truly believe Scag is the pacesetter . They are heavy duty commercial grass cutters all the way.

The decks are heavier duty , the frames are heavier duty, etc. My Scag Tiger is now working on 10 years of gobbling up a couple of acres of home lawn without a hiccup. I do change the oil, hit it with grease, clean its filter, and sharpen its blades all once a year. I did have a flat once too. I have seen my buddies go through all kinds of mowers in that time frame.

One thing is your local dealer and support though. If you get the best service and price through a dealer then go with that.

Case in point, at my wifes parents farm. They have John Deere. John Deere everything. Tractors, combines, boots, clothes, hats, tools, toys, cars, guns ... well maybe not those last two ;) ... but their equipment is Deere.

They liked my Scag , but Deere brought them a zero turn out, left it and made them a great deal. When it needs something the Deere guys hop right on it for Grandma. So the Deere is right for them.

+! on Scag Very heavy built. Have one for about 10 years.

I had a Yazoo-Keys 48" mower I used for 12 seasons with no maintenance required other than changing oil and filter. A really good machine.

In December 2011 I bought a 52" Gravely professional mower. It is quite a machine. I'm starting my second season with it. No complaints.

Let me plug a Central New York-made brand....Ferris.

Very popular with commercial guys who do it for a living.

They were a private company, but I heard that they are now owned by Briggs & Stratton.

Known to be very well-built and heavy-duty.
