Another bear thread! True story. AK fishing guide saves his clients from a charging Grizzly bear with his 9mm (he left the 44 mag at home).
I have killed enough bears to know how important shot placement can be, even with large-bore rifles. I was well aware of the limitations of my 9mm pistol, even with Buffalo Bore ammo. I was aiming for a vital area with each shot; because it all took place between 6 and 8 feet, they were not far off. But hitting the head and brain of a highly animated and agitated animal is a difficult shot.
See article for pics. Pretty amazing.

Phil has lead an interesting life. For years I have read his tales of his life in Alaska. I have hunted big game for 50 years and seldom give more than a cursory glance at other gunwriters recommendations. Phil is an exception. Phil has done extensive testing on animals including whales. When he makes a recommendation it is from experience. One of the few people I would like to sit down to dinner with.

Good to know about that BB ammo, in a pinch.
Making more noise, to avoid startling the bear, might be a good tactic.

There is a guy on YouTube who shoots bears with a 9mm. He's an idiot but what he does is camouflage himself and let the bear get close then shoots him in the eye and laughs.

All those idiots that shoot something and then laugh like little girls should be made to give up hunting till they grow up. I have shot many big game animals and the desire to giggle never crossed my mind. And it always puzzles me why people think a shot in the eye is fatal. It is not. A shot to the brain after it passes though the eye can be fatal. The eye can easily be shot and have no lasting effect other than blindness. I once saw a 2 pound cottontail rabbit shot through both eyes with a 7mm Rem Mag. and still be sitting upright.

This wasn't fatal and the poor bear ran around for a few seconds in pain and anguish before falling down ....and probably didn't die right away. That when he was laughing. I was so pissed seeing that. It still angers me thinking about it

Stop me if you've ever heard this one before...You can survive a bear attack with a .22....Just shoot your partner in the knee cap and then run like the wind.:o:D

That crops up every time we have a bear thread. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've read it here. And it's been on other boards, too.

I have had a few experiences with bears. When I was 16 I ran away from home and ended up in the far north. While looking for a lost milk cow near the Yukon border, I walked between a sow black bear and her cubs. Now having read Outdoor Life and author Ben East I just knew my time on this earth was near an end. Without any doubt I know no bullet in a knee cap would hinder my exit. I do remember clearing the short man in front of me. I literally jumped over him. He was short and I was above him but I do wish there was an official Olympics judge with a tape measure. Would have been the only gold I ever won.
