I get a kick out of reading them...and I often learn something from each of them. To me, that is the whole point.
It is always good to "scenario-ize" what we would take and what we would all do in a worst case scenario.
But everyone seems to leave out Mr. Murphies Laww and his hand in whatever we would try to do. Not to mention the fact that every situation will be different from hour to hour.
The reason I bring this up was some shows I had watched involving doomsday scenarios. I found most of this stuff to be laughable science fiction, but it did raise points about people and their natural instincts and was pretty accurate on what people would do and act in an apocalyptic event.
1. If you haven't stocked up before hand on supplies and ammo, you probably have the same chance as a snowball in a very hot place. Supplies run out and resupply will probably be non-existant. Your neighbors and family just may be your worst enemy and go after your stash. Besides, such a large supply cache will not be easily transported, if at all.
2. The further you live out in the wilderness might mean you live longer, but not much. Again, human nature and roving bands of outlaws not too unlike the bandits of the old west can be expected. If it is a trained enemy force, then like I told the survivalist many years ago who was going to snipe off Russians with his rifle, the opfor will merely call in arty or mortars and eliminate you and your rifle and your team and will never even see your face doing so. Fighting off such bands at a retreat...even if you have a large "group" with you, is only short term. You WILL be overrun eventually.
3. Fleeing the cities. I got two words for you: KATRINA and RITA! You going to load up your truck and head for the hills? Well, so is everyone else. A small town over 164 miles northwest of Houston in rural central Texas had traffic congestion that was history making to them. So you stay put. In a worst case scenario, you will be doing the same thing Berliners did during the last days of WWII under the advance of the Russian Army...only you will be doing that with hordes of people. Good luck with that.
I could go on, but I'll end this here. I'm not out to tick anyone off or alienate anyones beliefs. I am just pointing out logic and something to take into account. The only place anyone could truly ride out a SHTF scenario is on Moonbase Alpha...and it doesn't exist. It's a roll of the dice. To me, it is like the Battle Of The Alamo: you keep your faith and keep up the fight until the end.
