Thought of another deal I got into 35 years ago on the job. I and my partner were assigned to escourt something across country involveing several trucks across numerous states in a unmarked and plain cloths.
The drivers got to spend a night in a motel but we couldnt as especialy then one of us had to be sitting in the dark watching things. Actualy we also got a room, but each by switching with the other got supposedly about two hours apiece. You get keyed up and are out of luck.
Anyway we got to where we were going and got another surprise. Some authority figure over us said I have to hold you guys here a number of weeks! We probley only had a change or two of cloths apiece and just pocket money. The original deal was we were to turn in our rental car and catch a flight home. We were about 40 miles from the nearest civilian motel! This meant each of us had to sit in the middle of nowhere guarding our item 12 hour shifts besides haveing to spend two hours a day driveing to relieve each other. My partner also was a close friend. He was about a dozzen years older than me and had just came back to work from a heart attack. We had got to where we were about 6 pm and both of us were dead tired from next to no sleep for several days and nights. I told him I would stay, he should take the vehicle to town, get a cheap motel and releave me the next day. The group left me in the middle of a desert on a huge military base to guard things and I belive it was about 15 or 20 miles to the nearest human at a guard gate. Someone did give me a pac set. About a half hour after they left a huge truck with a overheavy astronomous exspendsive and secret load lost its air brakes or whatever broke loose! It rolled down the grade, hit and wiped out a huge crane about 80 yards away, wipeing out the kenworth!
I got on the radio and had no idea who I was talking to, but told them I needed help. Maybe 20 minuets or more went by and finaly in the far distance below me I seen a military jeep with two soliders headed my way with a old pickup following them. I had a good idea what I was in for! They pulled up on me, one put a M-16 on me and the driver pulled out his pistol. I was in civys, had my badge in my hand and answered the questions okay. Soon the pickup pulled up with a old guard almost the age I am now wearing levis, a straw stetson and a kacki shirt with some type badge demanded to know who I was. I polietly told him my name and asked him who he was. He almost bellered, Im God! I pulled out a notebook and pencil and politely asked him how to spell God?
He backed off. The important strong article I was watching wasnt hurt!
But for awhile I was positive I was history and so was everyone that worked on that project!
