I am slowly closing the office and have begun destroying files from before the turn of the century. Protocol back then was to have a 3.5" floppy in each file with electronic copies of stuff we typed, etc. Therein lies the problem.
Decided tha ta good idea was to burn them. So I fired up the Weber and threw around 50 on the coals. BAD IDEA Black smoke like you fet with burning tires and plastic. Put it out by putting the lid on. Now I am wondering if I have runied the Weber for furure use. I've scraped it and pressure washed it but my son (the Nurse) says that it will be forever contaminated and he advises against eating anything cooked on it. I'm thinking that if I burn some hardwood in it to get it really hot, then clean again and hit it with some oven cleaner that ought to be enough to "purify" it. I've gotten all visible traces of plastic off and plan to replace the grate that was in there but I ask those of you with more knowlege about these things what y'all think. Is it safe? If not is there somethin gI can do other than wha was suggested to make it safe? Or do I pitch a 6 month old Weber 22" kettle and buy something new.
The Scot in me says to clean and keep, but te spendthrift says this os the excuse you need to get an offset smoker.
What says the brain trust?

They should have melted on the coals and stayed there.

Just one big pile of melted plastic.

Remove what you can and fire up the unit and get rid of any that is left
that you could not chisel and hammer off.

I'm sure you'll be fine. Don't waste a nice grill. Worst case get a new grate for it if your family is concerned. I bet everyone gets more plastic microwaving stuff than you'd cause with your grill.

This sounds like an episode of "Better Call Saul". Just sayin...
Get some lump hardwood charcoal, not briquettes, make a double size fire in that thing. Should get over 600 degrees easy, my Weber kettle will anyway. Cool, clean it out, but a new grate and resume grilling. If your first meal tastes faintly of plastic I'm an idiot, get a new grill.

The answer to this dilemma depends on how much you want that offset smoker.

Right now you have a perfect reason to get the smoker. It’s important to recognize that these events create a situation that allows you to have both.

If you get the smoker, you’ll still have the Webber which you can resurrect at your pleasure using any method you choose.

The Webber is toast. My recommendation is to burn the file in an open fire pit or a 55 gallon drum conversion to a fire pit. The alternate selection is to hire a professional shredder and let them dispose of the remnants or burn them in a fire pit.

Purification is a matter of how much your family members are invested in their "diagnosis".
I'm thinking that if this is the son with the grandson, hey, the argument is not worth it. Don't wanna have family members not showing up for dinner.

I like the new smoker idea. But, if you wanna save money on the next grill, check out Craigs List. A year or so ago I got a $220 Weber kettle near new for $60 off Craigs List.

The grill is now imbedded with the digital data,,
cast iron is a well known long term storage solution for digital data,,
Erasing is almost impossible, hence the benefit of this material for long term storage.

Put the grill in a long term safety security storage container at a bank.

Otherwise, someone will have access to all that data,,
