How are these grips for shooting .44 Mag out of a compact, round butt 629? I kind of like the look of the "Combat Super Rosewood Crocback/Stipple" ones.

Per my other thread, I just bought one of the 3" 629 Deluxe revolvers and it comes with checkered wood combat grips. When handling the gun, I can tell that these won't be very comfortable to shoot heavy loads much. They are quite narrow at the backstrap and seem like they will direct a lot of force into a small area of the palm.

I prefer the look of a good wood grip to rubber, though rubber can be a good answer for shooting.

So back to the Altamont combat grips... Any hands on experience? Are they the same profile as the stock stocks? Are the stock ones actually Altamonts? Seems likely and if so, the other styles probably won't be any better for shooting more than a few rounds.

Other stocks I'll look at are the X-frame Hogues, Tamers and Diamond Pros.

Thanks.

I don’t believe you will find a huge difference between the two as far as shooting.

From my experience with the Altamont combats, it's not the palm of your hand that gets brutalized but the inside of your thumb from the thin cut sides. I'd suggest Hogue grips unless you want to splurge and treat yourself to a set of Culinas.
