Here in FL, shoving someone to the ground can get you shot. However, I don't blame the media, I blame two childish 60 year olds. Sounds like neither should be allowed to own firearms if they cannot handle their emotions.

The guy who shot, we'll call him Ralph, should not have even asked for a patch. In my opinion it was just a chance to crow and he's not a very good shot to begin with. Further, he's a Trap range master. This means he has a stack of patches and could have just given himself one. Stupid.

The guy who shoved, we'll call him Jack, shouldn't have. He could have walked away. He could have just said, "Leave me alone." He could have...any number of other actions. He's not a good shot either. Stupid.


If I were a psychiatrist, I would say both of these guys are insecure and have a deep seeded need to impress other people with their shooting. Since they are not good shots, they rarely get the chance to impress. Therefore, Jack was upset that Ralph got 25 when he didn't and wanted to steal this "victory" from Ralph. Ralph, because he needs to show off, couldn't let it go and got in Jack's face. Stupid squared.

The club will not miss them.

Just my opinion but I wouldn't want to be at a gun range while known hot heads are present. Getting physical over a patch? I think they both need to be limited to the kiddies area for a while. Guns and stupid people don't mix very well. The guys were both range masters? I believe it is time for new range masters.

If anyone needs or wants a patch that bad to show what they are capable of, well, to me that's pretty sad. If they somehow are allowed to maintain their membership, the range should conduct a one time shootoff competion between these two pillars of society. Whomever hits the most out of 25, wins. Loser, shuts up. Invite everybody.

FWIW, unless Jack is in some kind of position of responsibility for verifying that the patches are only awarded when deserved, he should have just kept his opinion to himself. It is none of his business if Ralph does or doesn't get a patch - or even another patch (since he has many). Calling another man a liar is fighting words where I grew up.

Was Ralph wrong to get in his face for it? Yeah, but personally I won't stand for someone publicly calling me a liar and would take great offense at that myself. On top of that, if I read it right, Jack was the one who crossed the line to escalate a verbal disagreement into a physical altercation.

I'm not saying Ralph was innocent, but as the facts have been presented, IMO, Jack should be permanently ejected from the club. Ralph should receive a temporary suspension to think about his contribution to this situation getting so out of control.

I learned a long time ago that nobody really gives a flying fandango about what I did or how many patches I got. I do stuff for myself and really don't care what people think or whether they know about it. The stuff I do for a living doesn't earn a lot of "attaboys" from the general public but what it does earn is a satisfaction of doing a good job at something most lawyers don't have the stomach to do. I KNOW I'm good and that's all that matters. I really feel sorry for the two guys in your story-they must have absolutely miserable lives outside of the range.

The only argument that I saw at a range was a young blonde woman trying to qualify for concealed carry told the instructor that he could not tell her what to do. I don't think she expected such a quick trip to the parking lot.
