Ambushed pizza man kills attacker (news No charges will be filed )

Miller gave the following version of events to police, Metts said: Miller exited
the car with his pizzas. The young man standing in front of the house asked him if he had change for a $100 bill. Miller grew suspicious on noting that the young man had no money.

The young man began to hit him, and Miller spotted two other men coming toward him out of a nearby woods. Miller began to run away, pursued by the young man, who was hitting him. As he ran, he drew his pistol and fired, hitting him in the upper torso. The shots caused the two other men to run off.
From that account, it sounds like just giving up the pizza would by no means guarantee that the attack would stop. The deliveryman was being punched as he retreated, and he could see reinforcements on the way. How savage does the beating have to get before he can respond?

Is the brick-to-the-head style beating that Reginald Denny received sufficient?

He needs more range time.... two got away.

"Metts said that although an investigation will continue, one thing about Miller’s
using his weapon is clear: “This sends a loud message to the criminal element
- you don’t know who’s going to be armed and who’s not going to be armed
when you go to rob someone"

Sturgill was a senior at Irmo High School and a musician who received
honor grades and planned to join the Army at the end of this school year, said
his parents, Lynn and Paul Sturgill Sr., on Sunday night. They said they were
stunned to learn of their son’s death.

“This was the first time he has ever been late for his curfew,” said Lynn Sturgill,
interviewed Sunday night in front of her Kenna Drive house, less than half a
mile from Irmo High. “He’s a good kid.”

Oh, please, the first time late for his curfew? Sure! I'll bet if you ask this kid's teachers and others outside his immediate family, you will get a completely different story!

A pizza deliveryman acted in self-defense when he fatally shot a teenager
who was assaulting him during a robbery Saturday, Lexington County sheriff’s
detectives found. No charges will be filed against 43-year-old Christopher Miller
in the death of 17-year-old Paul Sturgill, Jr., according to sheriff’s deputies.

Detectives determined Thursday that Miller acted in self-defense after reviewing
the case with the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office and a Lexington County magistrate
Miller released a statement Thursday thanking the public for support during a
“very difficult time.”
“I also ask that you have some sympathy and compassion for the family of
the boy that died,” he said in the statement. “They are suffering more than I.
Please keep them in your prayers.”
Sturgill and three other unarmed men chased Miller when he arrived at a house
on the 300 block of Avery Place Lane on Saturday night, authorities said.
<>Someone had called in an order to a St. Andrews Road carry-out restaurant for
two pizzas. Miller said he ran about 100 feet while Sturgill beat him before he
pulled the trigger. <>He fired two .45-caliber rounds into Sturgill’s chest, authorities
said. Miller, who had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, has resigned from
Pizza Hut.
Jason Beckham, 18, Carlos Dates, 20, and Justin Roundtree, 18, are charged
