Still confined here in Switzerland. I was fondling some guns, then I realised that in my mind those four really represent US small arms in a classic way, steel and wood

A pump action shotgun Winchester 1300 defender
A Winchester 1894 trapper lever action rifle
A classic revolver S&W 27
A classic semi auto handgun Colt Gvt Model series 70

One would still be well-armed with that collection today despite all the high-tech polymer and AR platform development that has occurred. You would only need a spare 26-28 inch barrel with a modified choke for the pump and you would not need another gun.

My dad always said “a man only needs a Model 70 in 30.06, a Model 12 in 12 or 16 Gauge, and a Model 10 with a 4 inch barrel. But don’t tell your mother I said that.”

Great picture and interesting theme, but if it is up for debate...

I would argue that the Model 27 doesn't quite fit in with the others. The 27 is a "flagship" of the line, the others seem to be straight-up, no frills working guns. Maybe a Model 10 or a 28 slides in there a little more comfortably.

Or not!

Good "working" collection.
You're well set for just about anything - that S&W Model 27 would be a nice "Bar-b-que" gun. The rest would handle anything that needed it.

For many years I got along with a Winchester Model 50 12 Gauge,
a Winchester Model 70 with Weaver K4 scope, and an S&W Model 19
Combat Magnum .357. Never felt under-armed.

Well I very recently bought this 27-3 real cheap ($ 600) so there’s that. And I don’t have a 28.

This is quickly becoming, a Western Europe/Lower 48 4 gun set thread. Of my current collection, I would go with: Weatherby Vanguard VGX 300 Win Mag, 1964 Browning Superpose 12 gauge, Model 28-2 4" and a Weatherby Mark XXII (Anschutz 64) 22 bolt action.

If going worldwide with 5, I'd leave the shotgun, handgun, and 22 the same. I'd drop the 300 mag and go with two Ruger No 1's, one in 7x57, and one in 375 H&H Mag.

Until I reached my 30's and had some discretionary income I got by with a Sterlngworth FOX double 12(MA was a shotgun only State for deer!),a High Standard 22 auto, a 38 Colt OP revolver and a 22 LR semi Winchester Model 74 auto rifle and never felt really deprived. I shot my 1st Pheasant, quail, duck, goose,rabbit and deer with the Sterlingworth!

If that 94 Trapper is the real deal, you have quite a prize there. I would get a letter from Winchester on that one.

For quite a few years when I was in high school, college, and about 2 years beyond, my arsenal was a sporterized Swede M94 (6.5x55), a Remington Model 11 12 gauge, a Remington Model 550-1 .22 rifle, a Ruger flat top Blackhawk .44 Mag, and a Colt 1911. It was all I needed and I really wish I had stopped there. But of course I didn't. Of those original five, the only one remaining is the Colt 1911 and I will never sell it.

It was made in 1980, so nothing special, but I really like it and it’s got quite a kick with the 16’’ barrel and lightweight

The SAA is a rabbit [emoji235] hole [emoji874] I am resisting so far, seems like an expensive addiction. And they are a lot for sale here, 2-3 older collectors are thinning the herd.

The Garland is very rare, and expensive here. One for sale that popped out recently
