Just got the Bodyguard 38 special and ammo, but haven't fired it yet. I thought I would target practice with WW 130gr FMJ; then use +P 125gr JHP for personal protection. I've read dozens of reviews about the recoil of this little snubnose (some good, some not so good) which is why I thought the lower grain would be less harsh on my 'old' hands; but now I'm not so sure. Does anyone have any experience with this gun that can give me advice?

I practice with 148 grain wadcutters that I reload. Recoil is mild and right at point of aim. My carry load is the speer gold dot load made for short barrel revolvers. Recoil with the 130's will not be a problem.

I carry lightweight revolvers and the recoil is over rated..While I enjoy shooting 100 rounds through the steel j frames at one range session, shooting 50 through the lightweights is not a problem.

Recoil is perceived in many ways. Before you go shooting invest in a quality set of ear muffs that fit you well and use foam ear plugs together with the muffs. With double ear protection you will be delightfully surprised how the recoil perception is reduced.

Good Shooting

I bought some of the Winchester 130 grain FMJ for a class a few years ago.

Out of my M649 is was fairly easy to shoot due to moderate recoil.
I was surprised to find that it shot to point of aim (the gun was usually
fed 158 grain loads) and was quite accurate.

Your plan sounds OK to me.

I have been using Speer Gold Dot Short barrel 135 gr +p in my 638. Recoil is not excessive yet it performs well in all gel tests. I use some 158 gr hand loads that hit to the same point of aim/impact, with minimal recoil. Be Safe,
