Ammo for S&W Model 41

My 41 chokes on CCI SV, but it likes most of the Eley offerings except the stuff made in Mexico.

I've probably run several dozen brands of std vel .22LR thru mine over the years. Lately I've been shooting that white bulk box stuff that the CMP was selling a few years ago.

The green & blue box Remington target was one of the better shooting brands , along with Winchester T-22 and PMC Scoremaster.

Ironically , it's the real expensive imports that give the most trouble in my no-letter prefix Mod.41.

The main thing is to keep it clean and well lubed.

Mine out of Houlton, Maine isn't picky. It eats anything I give it. CCI Mini-Mags seem to work best on average in all of over a dozen .22's I own. I don't play with the super-dooper Match stuff.

I have a difficult time finding CCI in the area that I live. Probably because it so popular that most of the time all the retail outlets are always out of stock. I tried RMS, Aguila, Eley, Federal Gold Match, Wolf Match, and Fiocchi Super Match. Of all the brands, Fiocchi shot the best making a 0.25 inch hole at 40 yards out of a Ramson rest. The ammo is not expensive and has proven to be very consistent in my 41 long barrel. I did end up switching out the factory recoil spring after installing a Matchdot scope/base and recoil buffer. I purchased a Wolf spring set and after installing the 6.5 lb spring have had no malfunctions.

Hey Guys
As a new owner of the S&W model 41 that will be shipped to my FFL gun dealer sometime next week (early part of this Sept.'14) Can't wait for the
7in. barrel in my hands.
You guys have answer lots of questions for this newbie. This is the first time I ever owned a .22lr.
Now I was going to buy some amounts of brand(s) and run it thru my 41 to see what it likes.
From what I've read you guys are telling that: CCI Standard Velocity, CCI
MINI-MAG & WINCHESTER SUPPER X 37gr. are the best for my 41
I just bought those three brands and I'll see what the gun likes.

Thanks all you guys for helping out this ol' man . . . lol
GOD bless

Both 60's era M41's like CCI Standard, Remington Subsonics and MagTech standard.

If it was mine to shoot I would stick to 40 grain and standard velocity. My tests of velocity on CCI-SV show a considerable spread, which is not unexpected given its price. This is will show up as elevation spread at longer distances.
Of course, spreads of cheaper stuff are much worse, CCI-SV is a great value.

When shooting at 10 yards (my garage range) I can't isolate the elevation variable from my poor performance so CCI-SV is fine.
If you shoot at longer ranges (25-50 yards) premium ammunition such as Eley or Lapua will probably shoot smaller groups, at least it does in mine. Eley Club has been a good compromise for me.
