I recently acquired my first antique gun. It is a 1864 S&W #2 old army. It is in such good shape I thought i would take it to the range but I can't find any 32 rimfire ammo anywhere. Any suggestions?

Actually, if you look around hard enough, you can find .32 RF ammo on the collector's market. Whether it would work or not is unknown. There are also special empty cartridge cases available that use a .22 RF case as a primer. If you look around on this site you will find information. Might also check on Dixie Gun Works site to see what they have.

My suggestion is to not shoot it - go out and buy something else old to shoot that ammunition is readily available for. Lots of old top-breaks available that will shoot .38 S&W.

Fiochi occasionally makes a run of .32RF. Find a dealer who handles their products and see if they can order you some boxes. It won't be cheap.

Keep watch on the auction sites. Once in awhile it turns up.

I have fired my No. 2 using the long machined .32 rimfire cases from Dixie gun works, 5 grains of Pyrodex "P" for powder charge, and a .310 Hornady round ball. Velocity of the light round ball (over 1100 fps) was exceptional and accuracy was good at close range. The problem with shooting an oldie like this, IMO, is not that it is hard on the gun. The gun takes it just fine. The problem is all of the handling of the gun during shooting, and especially during the cleaning afterward. With a gun of the value of a No. 2, constant handling and cleaning will cause the fragile finish to deteriorate. So, after the fun of firing it, I have put my No. 2 back in the case.
