Ammo price gouging.....

Back around the year 2000 I used to think that Q3131 at $180 a case was pricey. Now I just think that those were the days.

I still have 1000 rds. I purchased a couple of years after the Y2K fiasco. I think by that time it had gone back down to about $160/1000.

I've said for years to buy it cheap and stack it deep. It ain't going to get any cheaper.

Just a thought about the ammo "shortages" and price gouging. Woman live longer than men and in the future there are going to be thousands of widows selling huge numbers of cases of ammo that their husbands bought and did not shoot.

My widow will shoot up most of the pistol ammo and all of the smaller bore rifle ammo.

Yeah, but that stuff is old now. You better send it to me for proper disposal. :D

For anyone new here, that comment was only in jest. Properly stored ammo will last a loooooong time.

The seller is free to ask whatever price he wants, whether anyone buys it or not is up to them. If you look online, the big retailers have either run out of stock or raised the price on what they have left. A friend who's primary business is ammo sales at shows told me that he may not be able to replace many of the items he has sold out of for some time. The distributors have run low or out and can't say when they will be restocked, and equally important, where the price will be when they are.

We've been through this before and it's always the same. Lots of new buyers, people who don't normally keep any stock of ammo put back and those who suddenly fear they don't have enough panic and rush out to buy and the normal sales cycle can't handle it. Businessmen still have bills to pay even if they run out of merchandise so the prices go up and people cry "foul". It's a problem, largely of our own making. Don't join the panic, let sales slow down, the odds are prices will stabilize and go back down again.

We all knew that, sooner of later, this "shortage" would come again. In the meantime some of us bought all we needed for the foreseeable future when the price was right and it was available. As any Boy Scout could tell us "Be Prepared". This isn't rocket science.

Those prices are criminal. But it's because everyone is panicking and buying AR-15's. I got tired of playing that game, sold mine and bought a Rossi lever action chambered in .38/.357. Not much demand for these calibers.

I did the same thing today. I liked my AR but the recent developments with ammo and what not made up my mind to sell it. I went out and bought a Rossi 92 chambered in .38/.357 with the proceeds. :)

Yeah, but.

The short term gain may benefit the retailer.

But in my mind, I will remember Bolsa Gunsmithing :D for not going for the price gouge, and Ammo Bros.:mad: for selling .223's at $1 a round!

This has been my experience in Southern California.

Panic buying happens, IF your not prepared.

Happy New Year.

I just got the Cheaper Than dirt catalog and they are at it again! They are selling 1000 rounds of LC 223/5.56 ammo and they want 600 damn dollars! The last gun ban saw them way overpricing mags and ammo and they are at it again and even before the ban starts! They want $400 for 500 rounds of American Eagle .223 ammo loose in a bulk box.

I'm all for capitalism but what about customer loyality too? I for one will not be buying from them and haven't since the last ban.

When I first got into shooting a veteran LEO and experienced shooter gave me a bit of advice about ammo. He said that whenever I purchased any ammo to shoot 1/2 of it and set the other 1/2 aside in the event ammo becomes scarce someday. I questioned the wisdom of this initially, but several months later came the 2008 panic and ammo was indeed scarce. I ran into him during the height of the 2008 panic, and he reminded me again of what he told me. At the time he was selling Speer Gold Dots +P 9mm hollow points 250 rds for $100. I bought some and still have plenty today. I currently reload and I never thought we would have another run on ammo so soon. I am glad I followed his advice. Now if I can just find some small pistol primers.

And if we don't vote against every politician that votes against guns in the coming midterms, bad times and high prices will be the legacy we leave our children.

If that doesn't happen in the mid-term election our grandchildren (in my case) will never know the America I grew up in. I was hoping people would wake up and not reelect Obama but they did and now we are stuck with him for at least 4 years.
