Fully recognizing that this is a complete Newbie question, can I shoot +P ammo in the Model 10-8 I picked up over the weekend?
Not a steady diet, but I could see myself carrying this gun occasionally.

yes you can, in my opinion the +p ammo is not all that hot anyway.
I shoot my heavy reloads in some of my 1950's s&w's, and have for years.

Any K-frame with the model number stamped on the frame (appx 1957 onward) is GTG with +P

What's the advantage of +P? To my untrained eye a plain old .38 seems perfectly adequate to put a hole in whatever it is that needs one and if you need a bigger hole wouldn't you get a bigger gun?

To my understanding the +P adds a bit of pressure to help the hollow point move faster and expand. It was our issued round back in the day (FBI +P 158 grain HP) and I can attest to how well it worked from first hand street experience.

Welcome to the FORUM! SURE to +P! You don't need them at the range other than to see how they shoot. +P means + $. Bob
