Hey guys.
What brands of ammo should be avoided. Handgun and rifle.
And which brands are not great but acceptable?
I am talking range/practice ammo not self defense. Thanks!

Ive used ateel. Worked just fine, i dont need super accuracy, ill mostly shoot them through my AK but ill also do it through ny AR. However not through any handguns. Dunno why

No doubt there are lots of opinions on this, but my only bad experience with ammo (before I started reloading) was with Herter's 9mm. Dirty stuff with a number of FTF's.

Problems with Remington 22 LR Ammo.

Last week I sent Remington a letter explaining to them that I have a box in my desk drawer containing 38, 22 LR golden ctges from the green box. They were fired from 5 or 6 different gun's both rifles and handguns in the last 6 months. I told them that I would send them back to them if they can tell me a legal way to do it. Some were struck on the rim three times.
In my opinion Remington has a problem with quality control. The priming material doesn't appear to be getting into the whole rim of the ctge. Its only been a few days so I have not received a reply to my letter. I have not had a problem with other brands of 22 ammo.

I use them all. Some for range others for SD. Seldom had any real problems. Steel case ammo go into every gun I own. Over a decade of shooting and tens of thousands of rounds I've had 2 problems with steel case.

If your handgun is .40, I would strongly suggest avoiding ANY Brand selling 40+P.
Why? There's no SAAMI standard for 40+P.
Buffalo Bore is one company that touts having 40+P. There are a few others.

MagTech is one company who has replaced a member's Shield40 due to over pressured rounds. I haven't heard of any problems with their 9mm though.

Absolutely. I will not buy Remington ammo. Especially their .22. Very especially their Thunderbolt, which almost destroyed my Ruger Mark II, ditto my pre-18. Absolute trash. At best, their ammo is dirty, inconsistent and underpowered.

Best .22? CCI. Centerfire? PPU, Independence, S&B, RWS, of the less pricey brands.

The Remington Thunderbolt 22LR is dirty. It's cheap. However, my Ruger 10/22 rifle, never misses a beat, with it. I have 2 50 round magazines, a bunch of 10's, and it shoots as fast as the trigger is pulled. I also maintain the rifle often.

I avoid foreign ammo, as Sig, Ruger, and Smith imply use of SAAMI spec ammo only. I don't want to void/compromise the warranties. H&K "suggests" to not use aluminum cases (they do say NATO or SAAMI spec). Can't say they are bad (I have used Perfecta and Herters 9mm brass without issue of any sort), but I suggest you stay in manufacturer suggestion while a firearm is in warranty.

In 22LR - I avoid Remington® Thunderbolt®; filthy stuff, leaves lots of leading in barrel of both my pistols & rifles. Also Remington® Golden Bullets™; too many misfires, FTE, & FTF. I like CCI® and Federal® the best.

Centerfire Handgun (38, 357, & 41) - I stay away from any steel cased ammo & ALL PMC (Filthy). Like Federal®, Fiocchi®, Hornady®, Magtech®, and Sellier & Bellot®

Centerfire Rifle (7mm Mag, 30/30, 30/06, & 444 Marlin®) - No Remington® Ammo, too inaccurate. Prefer Federal®, Hornady®.

Shotgun (12, 16, 20, 28, & 410) - No Baschieri & Pellagri, or Clever-Mirage (both Italian) dirty, inconsistant velocities, poor patterns. Prefer Federal®, Fiocchi®, and Kent® over all other shotgun ammo.

Speaking to .22LR, I buy what I can find. I am NOT a competition shooter. If it is close, it works. I use the .22 more for practice that arthritis forbids me to use .45 for.

CCI is always best.

Rem Thunderbolt does lead up the barrel, but if you are big on cleaning after every range trip (as I am) 100 or so won't be a horrible issue if the price was right (less than 4c per round would be my target for TB).

Rem Golden Bullet has a fair rate of trashed rounds, but again, at 5c or less per round, I can't argue.

I found CCI MM this weekend. 300 Rounds for $30 (add tax as well), and then today 200 rounds of CCI SV for $19 (add tax). At those prices, if there is a FTF round, I call CCI to raise cain.

Lately Federal Lightning and Auto Match, as well as American Eagle, have been junk. I suspect a manufacturing change (for the worse).

Badge 851 mentioned Fiocchi as among his favorites. I forgot to mention it, but it's one of mine, too. Their .22 is nearly as good as CCI, their centerfire handgun ammo is very good, also.

I wondered about Fiocchi. Good to know.
What about the MFS zinc plated ammo for ak's/ar's?

Glaser Safety Slug. Just a gimmick.

.410 defense ammo. More gimmicks.

Eley Tenex & Eley Match 22LR. Accurate, but no more accurate than ammo costing 80% less.

Remington 22LR. Just how hard is it to spin priming compound around the rim?

3 and 1/2 inch 12 gauge. It doesn't do anything that can't be done with 3".

That has been my experience with TB also. At 7 ~ 10 yards, and shooting offhand, I really can't see much of a difference in group size. Failure to fire is a rare event. Since it is a single shot, there aren't any feeding issues. Just to add insult to injury, my TC Contender shoots it as well as any non-match ammo!
