I've had tinnitus for over thirty years, maybe forty, from shooting too much without ear protection. I'm almost deaf in my left ear and have significant high frequency loss in the right. After a certain point, muzzle blast is forever.
On the other hand, in the wildly unlikely event that I have to fire a handgun in my home for defense, I won't worry a hell of a lot about more hearing loss.
The handgun in question will be a .38 Special revolver, not a .357 Magnum; but that's more for quicker recovery for a second shot and less of a dazzling fireball than concrn for my already screwed up hearing. That ship has sailed.
