An observation

If you think gun forums are bad, take a look at the "community" forums like Topix. You certainly don't have to possess any relevant knowledge to post. In fact if you want to fit in, you have to misspell every other word.

I used to be a member of the SIG Forum.
I carried a Sig Sauer for a time and enjoyed it. I guess that I was too confrontational or something, because I got the BAN hammer.
Never was told why either.
I asked, but still no answer.

I'm a member there too but I don't spend much time on it, usually only when researching stuff.

The big difference is that we have Kong to keep us in line.

"Laketime" entry is pretty much how I feel. I don't frequent many other of the gun forums except this one. There's a reason for that. The Colt forum is just too small. At least it seems like. The topic page is ok but not exactly what helps me. Not really criticizing that particular one but it is not like this one...(obviously)... The Ruger forum is like the Colt forum for me. The one mrchuck speaks of is one that I haven't visited in over a year. I got just a little filled up with the rudeness of many of its members, the sycophant nature of many members and the rather over-the-top opinions of the owner. Now, having said that, IT IS HIS FORUM and he has the right. He invited many members to exit if the "conversations" were not something to their liking. Reading some of the entries and the snotty responses and back and forth bickering, the snide and disrespectful nature of many members and, as said, rudeness of many members put me off and I left. No regrets.

Here, there seems to be none of that. Members here seem to be much more in control of themselves, the keyboard and their human nature. There is little controversy in spite of controversial subjects. Members are not outwardly rude to one another and the tone is consistently civil and free of the rancor that is very noticeable on other forums.

The reason(s)? Can't really say. Just that it is what it is and I like it and that is why this site is visited by me every day, and sometimes several times per day.... Example: A few day ago, I made an entry in the Historical section about General Patton's sidearms. I made a mistake which was pointed out by one of the members. That member simply noted that I was wrong on one point of the barrel length of Patton's SAA. The correct length was noted (which is correct) and the discussion moved forward. There were no insults, no nasty private messages, just facts and on-going discussion. That is what these internet sites are supposed to be about. Unfortunately, the anonymity of the net permits some persons to be idiots, as has been pointed out.... But, not here. Which makes this site my favorite. Now, I need to get off my soapbox and contribute some of my spendable income to this site.

The difference here is that this a gun specific forum where you don't get **** for owning an S&W. I stay away from the ultra 2A and Anti forums where rants and idiocy run rampant. I am also hesitant to take advice from people that would have to be at least 200 years old to know and have done all the things they have.

I started the internet and gun forum thing in about '94 with Prodigy as the ISP. Seems like it had a catchy name like "Prodigy Gun Forum". Things have changed on the intrerweb, and not for the better. Except for the porn.
