Here's a Mod 60, serial # 515XXX, with no R. I don't know for sure a mfg. date, probably '67 or '68. In 1969 the R was added to the serial numbers.

Besides the diamond grips, a sticker on the end of the box proclaimed "Stainless Steel" and the paperwork referred to it as a ".38 Chiefs Special Stainless Revolver."

I've had/have a lot of Mod 60's but never one of the old ones. This one's a keeper!

Really nice revolver, back in those days even the grip medallions were made in stainless.

Congratulations!!!!

All Stainless

Correct. Not only the S&W grip medallions, but also the grip screw, grip screw nut and grip screw bushing were stainless. Also, the washers on the inside of each grip were stainless. And they only did that with the Model 60. The Model 64, 65, 66 and 67 did NOT have stainless hardware on the grips. The "all stainless" aspect of the Model 60 was from the original marketing strategy back in 1965.

Misty I've got one that went down the line bout the same time as yours but I don't think we're in line for trade on this one:) She's a beauty.

Great looking Model 60 - You did real well so congratulations

OK, help a noob out, I just picked this up today as well as a K-17-4.
How can I tell when it was made?

GF that's a fine looking Model 60!

FastGuy: If the grips are original to the gun it's between '69 and '82. IIRC '68 would have diamond grips and after '82 the barrel wouldn't be pinned. Post the serial # and you will get a more accurate response.

I took the grips off and they are numbered to the gun, matching the numbers stamped into the swing out on the cylinder. There is another number on the butt of the gun, R100xxx.

SCSW says R100000-R190000 range is '74-'77, best guess is '74 since your # falls to the lower end of the range...
