I didn't want to hi-jack Ron M's thread about finding the ammo on the road but it reminded me of the best thing I ever found. I was driving on a semi rural, narrow 2-lane road once in the mid 70s and there was a Sears truck in front of me about a quarter of a mile with no traffic in between.

We had to cross a railroad track and when the truck went over it a crate fell out of the back and landed smack dab in the middle of my lane. No traffic behind me so I pulled over to investigate. Turned out to be a 7-hp outboard motor. :D  I used it on a small boat I had for about 10 years and then as a "kicker" on a bigger boat for another 10 years. Then I sold it for 90 bux.

Don't guess I'll ever beat that.

So, what have you found on the road? :)

I have found many things in and alongside the road in my 2,000,000 miles of driving. Though I did not find the next item, my great, great, great, great grandfather found a Cherokee Indian boy about 6 weeks old in the middle of a road. He stopped and spent the night and nobody came for the boy so he took him home and raised him with tragic consequences.

Quite recently-about 2 weeks ago? I saw a guy I THINK? who apparantly had smoked some of that synthetic marijuana, who was in the right lane of a 5 lane street-pants-undies pulled to ankles-bent over fast asleep. I called the cops of course-because he WAS in a traffic lanes-and was at night and could have been ran over. It was a gross but funny sight. I was parked about 100 or so feet from the person with hazard lights on kinda trying to make sure anyone coming down my side of the street-could see the person. When a cop finally arrives? he asked if I was the one that called this in? said yup-and then we both laughed so much the tears were flowing. Mind you-that was when we had our coldest temps of this "winter" so far.

Well my friend, that isn't exactly what I had in mind but it was most interesting. ;) It is quite possible that you saved this guys life so I guess you done good!

I was doing 70 the other in the driving lane the other day when a line of about 8 trucks blew by doing close to 80 being tailgated by a little Pontiac Sunbird or something similar. The driver was staring at his phone. As they went by, a truck pretty far up in the passing lane headed to the shoulder with purpose stopping really quickly. Pretty soon, the line of trucks started braking and moving to the driving lane with purpose, all but the Pontiac. The everybody starts braking and slowing down, all but the Pontiac. The driver of the first truck that hit the shoulder got out of his truck just in time to see the Pontiac run over his 24 foot extension ladder, which was blocking the passing lane. Pontiac never slowed down, at least until I passed him about ten miles down the highway with a flat tire. I honked and waved . . .

Heh heh, I never could tell if the person was a he or a she? but was a funny sight. The shirt was long enough to stop any moon sightings.:D

Some things are best left unobserved. There must be some balance to the decision of what must be discovered and what is necessary to make that discovery. I think you went the right way that time. ;)

I find a lot of tools in the Road as there are a lot of auto repair shops in the area,I once found a cell phone and My Wife went through the the phones phone book and found the owner,He was a Doctor and was glad to get it back and gave Us a bottle of good Wine for returning it.

Many decades ago.
Back in the day of cassettes and Jensen 6x9 triax speakers. I found a box in the middle of a service road. Turned out to be a brand new Blaupunkt car stereo.
I'm gonna put this in my car.
I took out the instruction and threw them away (I don't need no steenkin' instructions, I'm certified in electronics, I can easily install a car stereo), I did keep the wiring diagram.
The speakers I already installed in my car were all chassis ground.
So, I connected all the ground wires to the car chassis, connected the speakers, power and antenna, turned the unit on (expecting an amazing automotive music experience) and was disappointed.
Huh? What the (expletive deleted)? This sounds like (expletive deleted)!
Alright, I dug the instructions out of the trash and took a look.
There in big red letters, it read, "Do Not Common Ground, This Will Damage the Unit."
Well (expletive deleted)!
At least it didn't cost me anything.

Yet another reason for a dash cam.

I feel your pain Snubby. Me? I'm not certified in much of anything back in the day....but beer. But it was quite the custom for all us cool cats  to augment the sound systems in our jalopies using liberated speakers from one of the local drive in movies.

They never seemed to last very long because you could blow them out in one weekend by driving around with the volume knob turned all the way to the right. ;) But there was an infinite supply available and they were pretty easy to install. :D

Oh! I just remembered this. Not exactly something found on the road but it was a find while I was ON the road so I'm gonna sneak it in here if no one minds.

Working shift work in a refinery we had just gone from 8hr shifts to 12hr shifts. Till things got lined out we had to have someone on "stand by" during long change to make sure all the jobs got covered. If some one called off there had to be some one available to come in and cover. So for two hours at the first of the shift the stand by guy had to be with in 45 minutes of the plant.

I was on stand by but the fish were jumping into your bag in the surf and I was eager to get down to the beach and get a line in the water. I left early but stopped on the way to call in and see if I was clear. This was before cell phones so I pulled in at a gas station and used the pay phone. The change return thing was full and the floor was covered with quarters.

I don't remember how much it was but it more than paid for my gas and bait. I used to stop by there now and again but I never got a repeat of that little windfall.

...I have found a lot of tools in the road...biggest thing I have found was a large cardboard box with a brand new chandelier type light fixture in it...found a young lady's wallet once...told her I would meet her to return it...she was scared so I mailed it to her...she apologized...I told her I understood...she was amazed that her money and everything else was still in it...most interesting thing I saw in the road was a young lady squatting by her car wearing tan pants with big blue bell bottoms...when I got closer I realized the tan was her...and the big blue bell blottoms were her blue jeans around her ankles...she must have really had to go...
