...and other things found on the road.

I found a 20 ft fishing boat with a big outboard on the back sitting in the middle of a lane in front of a casino/bar with no trailer under it. It wouldn't fit in my pickup and I didn't have a trailer so I left it. Some one probably stopped for gas a few hours down the road and noticed his trailer was empty. Next time, he will check the straps before he starts.

A 16" crescent wrench, several knives and a few drill motors that were bnot worth picking up. When we lived by the ball fields we would average 2-3 mitts a season from being set on the top of cars. Had a sign on the porch, kids had to have id and a name inside the mitt or look real broke.

When I used to see a dead Squirrel dead in the road, I would stop and cut off it's tail, I would use them for tying flies, one day my wife and I were going somewhere and I saw a Squirrel in the road, I stopped cut off it's tail and threw it in the trunk, my wife was so mad, she said don't you ever do that again with me in the car, to this day she will never ask to use my knife. :D

I was driving home after afternoon collage, (summer classes) Driving down a rough U.P. county road. Up ahead I see what looks like a large chunk of cable, as I get closer I see it's about 24 inches in diameter, I stop and start walking toward it. The cable started to move, I was a Pine snake it was stretched 2/3 the way across the road. I quickly returned to my truck, cut a u turn and went to the bar that was about a mile back the way i came, The bar tender was good to me he let me change my underwear.

Bear in mind I do not like snakes, and the size and diameter could be a bit over blown some, a bit, OK a lot. But was a really big snake

I was going home one evening just after dark and saw a camo bag on the side of the road. Turned around and it was an Eddie Bauer shoulder bag. In the bag there was a pair of Eddie Bauer Goose down mittens a box of Win Super XX 3 inch mag shells, 2 5 packs of Slugs, a Canon AE-1 camera and a Savage 32 auto handgun. Really surprised it was still there as it was on a busy road on a Friday evening. Had to have been left there by a Waterfowl hunting party. Had the film developed to see if there were pics of anyone I knew but no people pics at all. Lots of bird pics. Those mittens are still being used. The Savage is still around somewhere.

OK, I don't know if this counts or not, but I'll toss it in here.

My wife and I were coming south on I-95, north of Fredericksburg, Va. one afternoon. Suddenly the traffic started to slam on brakes and slow down quickly. "What the *&*^%$" I was muttering, when suddenly the traffic in front of me parted, and there was a house in the middle of the road.

Well, it wasn't really a house, it was one of those "we deliver" wooden sheds. It had come off the trailer that was stopped in the same lane with guy's bailing out of the truck left and right. I swerved around it, thanking the Lord, I was going to be in FRONT of the traffic jam that was coming.

That thing broke into a thousand pieces it looked like. The walls were caved in, the roof was on the ground. I hate to think how long the cleanup took.

One afternoon shift just prior to Christmas, I got a call for some debris on the highway. I arrived to find two (large) boxes of whole frozen Dungeness crab.

One had broken open, but the other was untouched. I cleared the highway of any salvageable packages, then headed back to the station with 100 plus pounds of crab.

Since it was Christmas and the property bureau was closed, I disposed of it as best I could.

I once was driving thru the ghetto at work in the middle of the day, and in the middle of an intersection was a piano, sitting right in the middle of it. My partner and I got out. I was a bit shocked when he went over and began to play the piano.

About thirty five years ago I was headed over to a friends house that lived in what was then the end of civilization. People used to dump all kinds of things out there. Mostly junk.

This day I looked over and spied an AAR Cuda hood. Yellow and in great shape, just needed some paint.

I knew of another guy not to far away that had a plain Jane Cuda and took it over to him. I think he gave me $75 for it but don't hold me to that number. I really just didn't want it to go to scrap and woulda gave it to him but he insisted.

I was a salesman for twenty years. I've found tools, a suitcase full of state maps once. I found $125.00 dollars on the floor of a grocery store. The latest was a Buck knife in the middle of a logging road in Greenville,Maine.

Well, alongside a dirt road...

A trooper friend of mine found a Browning 50 caliber machine gun barrel along a highway. Called National Guard and they said was not theirs.
I helped him sell it to Springfield Armory.

Was that in the LV/Henderson area, in 1987, by chance?

In late '87 I stopped off in LV during a PCS move, and heard about an area out across from Nellis, used by locals as an informal shooting range. Drove a couple of miles from the main drag and found the general zone and shot for a while.

On the way back in, I noticed some familiar looking, small sheets of paper, alongside the road. They were pages from a CEOI, the Army authentication & (manual) encryption publication. Even tho it was a 'training' CEOI, it still had a CONFIDENTIAL security classification.

I got out and found an Army field safe nearby, with more CEOI pads. Someone had taken a sledge hammer to the safe.

I grabbed a handful of pages and drove to the gate at Nellis, and tried to explain it to the SPs...they took me in to their lieutenant, and we ended up making another trip out there to secure what we could.

I called a few days later and the word was a local NVARNG battalion (armor, IIRC) had been burglarized, and the field safe taken.

Came around a blind curve on I-25 doing 90,middle of nowhere in Wyoming and there was a couch just sitting there [emoji33]

Jeff Foxworthy: "Hay!!! If that thing is still here come dark...we got a NEW sofa!"

And a piano too! :D

Did people driving by throw money at him. :)

Funny this thread came up. Just a couple of days ago I was riding my Yamaha Grizzly four wheeler down a city owned public trail and found a hydration backpack laying in the middle of the trail. I rode back to the main parking lot and asked around but nobody knew anything about it. I opened it and there was a cell phone inside but the screen was locked. I also saw a wallet and a baby Glock and I didn't look any further I zipped it up and turned it in at the main office where they sell trail riding permits.
