I'm pretty good with center fire S&W's but know next to nothing about the .22's. However, I know a nice gun when I see it and I did some wheeling and dealing today and brought home this extrememely nice 17-6. I call 98%+ it has been shot but aside from a light turn ring there isn't a single mark or blemish on it. It came with the original box, including papers and unopened cleaning kit (inc sight adj tool), it's wearing a set of target grips that are dated July 16, 1990 and there was a set of small (magna?) grips in the box which the salesman said were the originals. They're stamped 70998, which doesn't jive with any other numbers on the gun so I don't know if that's true or not. Anyway, I've included a bunch of pics for your perusal. I'm wondering about what year it was made and (of course!) what it might be worth. The serial number is BEC7906.

Very Nice...
Strange thing is I thought all 17-6 models had a full barrel underlug.

Yoyrs is only the second 17-6 I have seen that did not have a full underlug.

Mine doesn't, either. S/N is BEB01xx. SCS&W III said some of the early -6's didn't.

Thanks for the replies. So I guess this is a pretty early example of the 17-6 given the August '89 mfr date and the short lug. I wonder if the target grips could be original to the gun, given the date stamp?

They are excellent shooters and you get a lot of shooting in for under $20 for a brick of ammo.

From the features on the end of the box it should have listed (TS) for target stocks so I would think the (SB) square butt would mean it came with magna's. I believe S&W had quit numbering the magna's by 1989 but I could not find the date they stopped in my book. It is a fine looking revolver and the triggers on these are awesome.
