After reading gdogman's post about his 29 ND, I started wondering about mine. It falls within the serial number range noted by Doc44 with an S220828 Serial number. I compared pics of a verified transitional from another thread, but I'll be damned if I can determine if the extractor rod is LH threaded by sight. Does it need to be disassembled to find out? It is a 4 screw frame. What are the other factors determine if the gun is in fact a transitional piece?

Your Model 29 looks like a standard one with an extractor rod with a right-hand thread and 4-screw frame. The extractor rod on the Model 29 discussed previously has a distinct relieved area behind the knurled tip indicative of a left-hand thread.

Transitional 29 ND gap on extractor rod

Here are pictures of my actual transitional 29 ND and you can see a distinct gap.

I find it easier to see on the nickel.

29 ND

Ahh, ok I see the difference. Fortunately I didn't get myself too excited! Thanks Doc and Gdog for the info, I appreciate it!

I seem to be on the look out all the time. There has to be more than just the 3 reported 29 ND transitional revolvers. I think they are more likely to be stumbled upon then found, but my search will continue!!! lol.

No Dash. As in Model Number with no "Dash and Number denoting an Engineering Change".

Well, I have a number of no dash revolvers, but never saw it abbreviated before and could not put 2 and 2 together. Guess I am getting old. LOL Thanks!

I have always thought MOD-29 was enough when describing a revolver of this vintage, but many collectors want to add "no dash". Seems unnecessary. If the 44 Magnum is a -1 or -2, just state MOD. 29-1 or MOD. 29-2 as stamped in the yoke cut. No more information is necessary. If there is no model number, just state 44 Magnum or Pre-29.
