So we put hogue grips on my fathers off duty J frame Model 36 Chief made in 1963 back in 78. We went to put the original wood back on, but of course we lost them.
I got a nice set online with the screw. They fit nice with a tad of pressure to get them seated. However the screw seems short, barely gets one thread in.
It appears to be the standard 5-44 Fillister head, 1 inch ( I didn't mike it at my fathers, so maybe it's short a few thousands)?
Try another screw or am I missing something else?
Thx!

A screw about 1" long is correct for J frame Magna stocks, bit it should go all the way through the threaded escutcheon. It's hard to tell without seeing it.

It's possible one of the escutcheons isn't fully seated. It's also possible someone came up with a replacement screw and the head is too large to go into the mating escutcheon. S&W did change the screw diameter and escutcheons over time.

Remove a little metal from the back-side of the slotted end ... if you only need a little and if the head is thick . Look at the slotted end and make sure there is enough metal ... also make sure the slotted head bottoms out in the fitting .
Chuck the screw in a drill and use a fine cut file to thin the back side .

Can you use the screw from the other grips ... if so ... use it and get a relacement for the Hogue screw at a later date .
