I just got a .38 S & W Special from my sister. It has the .38 S& W Special ctg on the side of the barrel, the serial number is 565XXX on the butt and the cylinder. Inside the grip is the written number 1919CY. On top of the barrel is Smith & Wesson, Springfield Mass USA, and the patent date is Sept 14, 1909. If someone could help me approximate when this revolver was built, I would appreciate it.

Hi JKB
Welcome to the forum. The first question is does there happen to be a letter in front of the ser# on the butt of the revolver. That letter makes a big difference in manufacturing date. Many leave this off because there is a space between them. Second ? is can you post some pictures please? If for no other reason than we just like to look at them.

Thanks opoefc, I appreciate that. Jake, There is no letter in front of the number. I'll have to figure out how to post a picture and take it. It needs reblueing, but otherwise looks fine. I'm going to take it out soon and see how it fires.

Is there any way to approximate a range of how much a revolver like this should go for? I just got offered $139, which I think is too low.

YES, that is TOO LOW !

If it works and has any finish left it will bring more than that. I would steer clear of the person making such a low offer.

Who offered the $139 ? Was it a store, or dealer ? If so, they have a markup
ranging anywhere from 30 to 40% , to sometimes a lot higher. If their markup is
50%, they would put it back out for $210, which without seeing any pictures of
the gun, is as good a guess as any.
