Another j-frame hammer question

Looking to instal a bobbed hammer in my 60-3. I'd like to keep the stock hammer as is, in case I want to restore it back someday. So I'll either need to find a hammer already bobbed, or do it myself. Are the j-frame hammers interchangeable?

Not exactly an answer to your question, but if you bob the hammer you MAY end up reducing the mass of the hammer enough that it will not give reliable ignition. Of course if you keep the original hammer you can always switch back. I THINK all the exposed hammer J-frame hammers are interchangeable. That does not mean it will not need to be fitted for trigger and sear contact.

If you check the Gunbroker and eBay auctions, you're likely to find a hammer already bobbed. You also might still be able to order a factory bobbed hammer. But be aware that the factory bobbed hammer is double action only.

Any J frame center fire hammer will interchange with yours after 1962 but of course only the the stainless models will have a stainless hammer. The early Mod 60 will have a chrome plated carbon steel hammer. In 1997 MIM Hammers and Triggers were introduced but still interchange.

Fitting is usually not necessary but might be. The main thing is to use the double action sear pinned to the front of the hammer from your original hammer. Be cautious not to lose the little spring behind it.

Good point about the DAO, I hadn't thought of that, although I knew that the gun they're for wouldn't have a single action, such as the NY-1, I think it was. I'm intending on looking at Ebay, and GB for a bobbed hammer, so I'm glad you mentioned that. I'll have to decide if it's going to be important to me. Offhand, I'd say that I like the single action for cans, n such. So maybe I'll do it myself, Ebay has lots of broken, and slightly bent model 36 hammers for cheap.
