Hey All,

Im new around here and have been checking out all the Model 915 Threads. I have been in the market for my first Handgun for a few months now, weighing my options/needs, and of course the caliber debate. After months of debate with myself I narrowed down my criteria. I want to spend around $400 OTD on something full size, in 9mm with a safety, preferably not polymer as they feel top heavy in my hand even when loaded. I was almost dead set on a used Sig 2022, but that deal came and went.

Anyway, I have been keeping my eye on the used section at my LGS, and yesterday they got a 915 in on trade. So after work I went down there and checked it out, and boy was it nice, and fit my hand well. I would say it was in Like new condition maybe around 90-95%. It was clean and only showed a tiny tiny tiny bit of holster wear on the slide. The guy at the shop broke it down and showed me the internals were all metal(unlike 910s) and all in good shape, with only alittle wear on the alloy frame(worn off bluing).

The asking price in 369 with original box/paper work and 2 mags, which come to just under 400 after taxes fees etc. They also said it had only 1 owner. So my question is this, is the wear on the alloy frame normal from just normal use, or is this something that I should be worried about?

Also is there anything comparable in the $400 price range? They had Sigmas around the same price, but I dont know why I would go that route when the 915 gets such great reviews in terms of reliability.

I ended up putting a deposit down on the gun so its mine if I want it, I am just weighing my options now.

Thanks!

I like 915's and that is not a bad price at all. I would not worry about the wear. CDNN has some S&W police trade-ins that are cheaper, but probably have more holster wear.

I saw the trade ins on CDNN, but with shipping and FFL fee it would probably end up to be more. Also I dont really like to buy things like this sight unseen. Thanks for the Reply!

Without seeing where the wear is it's hard to say, but do understand that an alloy frame is going to show wear with any amount of handling and use. The black anodizing comes off easily, especially internally where all of the steel parts rub against it. If the pistol looks to be in great shape otherwise I would say go for it.

BTW having shot both my 910 and 915 I'm having a hard time saying which one I like better. The 915 is of course supposed to be the nicer gun, but the trigger on my 910 is smoother and the sights much easier to pick up. Anyone finding either model in the display case for a decent price would be well advised to pick it up before it's gone.

Check the rails on the frame for wear, but otherwise I'd say go for it.

I paid 385.00 for mine with box and two magazines two years ago, so yours looks like a good price to me.

The worn area is ANODIZING (not bluing).

If you can manage to wear out a 915 to the point where it is no longer reliable, please let us know. I have not heard of it ever happening.

I got a spare just in case.

The 915 was my first duty gun and she took a whole lot of abuse. I put many many thousands of rounds down range without a single parts breakage or malfunction. Value line or not; it is a simple, reliable and accurate gun worthy of any holster.

$400 is a good price, especially since gun-flation has been going strong for years now. They are not going to get any cheaper as the supply dries up.

Thanks for the replies everyone. And my mistake mixing up the ano for bluing, i knew that! The wear that I saw was indeed on the rails where the steel slide meets the frame. There wasnt any gouging or anything like that just some shiny exposed alloy that stood out a bit. With that being said I'm gonna go for it. Now just have to wait for Uncle Sam to give me my money back. Pretty excited to go pick it up, especially since the the LGS gives out free hour sessions at the local pistol range with any handgun purchase. Ill make sure to post some photos when I get it.

Don't forget to use a good lube on those friction points and the rails. Get a good gun grease for that. Your LGS should have something.

I couldnt take the wait any longer and went and picked up the 915 on Friday. I broke it down, and lubed everything back and had the chance to fire a mag thru it. The gun felt great to shoot, nice DA pull and great single action trigger pull. Ill get a photo up soon

Update: Went to the range last night with a buddy of mine and we pushed 250 rounds thru the 915. No problems at all. Smooth and accurate, but man was it loud compared to the .22s other people were shooting there. Also got a lot of compliments from the other shooters and staff there about how new the gun looked. Overall I am very very happy with my purchase and may be hooked on smiths now.
