It's a postwar gun, likely early '50s (the upper sideplate screw makes it prior to 1956). Lots of "honest wear", I think :) .

I'm gonna guess about 1952 or so. It should be an "Improved" I-frame with the short grip frame and small trigger guard but with the newer, coil spring action. Technically, I would call it a late .32 Hand Ejector since it has not gotten to using the slightly larger J-frame yet. If it's as tight as you describe and all else is in order, it should be a fine shooter in spite of its obvious "cosmetic challenges."

Nice find. I would be proud to add it to mine as well.
Good job. Enjoy.

if i wanted to replace the grips, what model could i use on it?

I think you need I frame stocks, which are about 1/8" shorter than the J frame and are not interchangeable. If the right panel is numbered to the gun on the inside (and therefore original), definitely keep them no matter what other stocks you find.

I can tell you that s/n 60009x was shipped in 1953, so yours would be probably shortly after that. It would be an Improved "I" frame, with the coil mainspring, but still the short grip frame. J frame grips can be made to work, but you need to remove about 1/10" off of them which will overhang the gun butt. Search the various ebay and gun auction sites and you may luck out and find a set for an I frame. Unfortunately they don't show up frequently. I made a set from a pair of finger groove boot grips for a J frame before I found a pair of correct grips. Those grips could be refurbished by DWFAN, but would cost nearly as much as new grips or more, BUT they would be the originals.

the grips are original, so they will stay with the gun, despite the fact i might change them. the serial number matches.
under the grip i found stamped on the frame, 1154, could that mean 11/54? otherside is stamped V smaller H and then one more small H on the other side of the grip pin
