Two photos taken from the Daytona Beach Pier, one in the 1950's (oh, those cars!) and the other last year. The band shell, built in 1937, survives. Doesn't look like much else has. Those young lasses in the foreground are pushing 80 now. Tempus fugit.

Do they still allow driving on the beach there ..

Sadly not much beach left from the looks .. if scientist are right and ocean levels rise there will be even less ..

Cool cars! That's pretty nutty they drove on the beach back then. I wonder how frequently cars had to be towed out.

As far as the beach disappearing, maybe it is but the pictures could be taken at different tides as well.

Tide is a big deal on that beach. I was parked there once, well up from high water mark, and watched as a van closer to the edge got sunk past the doors. Once the waves reached, it undermined the tires till the chassis was on the sand. Everyone was looking for the owner, but it was locked, and no keys to be found. The flat beach was what made it goo for racing in the 50's.

Might be a good time to start building some desalination plants and start pumping water to the world's deserts and start farming them!!! Maybe feed a few starving residents of Africa. Solve a couple of problems with one stroke.

Well, it's at least 1957, I see a 57 Fairlane in the foreground, and the tail end of a 57 Bel Air in the parking lot.

Was on that stretch of beach back in '62. We were going to visit some friends that had moved to Hollywood just north of Miami. The motel Daddy stopped at for the night was connected to the beach and had flood lights where my brother and I could mess around on the beach.
In '69 you could still drive down the beach at St. Augustine. I lived below NAS Jacksonville while I was going through the Navy's AE "A" school, so when it came beach time, it was as close and a much better drive to run down the back roads to St. Augustine. Drive along the beach until there was a nice wide open stretch and park. There was a pretty wide margin that was usable. You didn't get too close to the water and you didn't drive too far back and get into the really dry sand. Larry

Lived in Daytona Beach for a while in the late '60s. Went to school there, met my wife there. Have fond memories of the place .

I remember my Dad driving and parking on Daytona & New Smyrna in the mid-60s. We'd stay/visit with my Mom's aunt & uncle near Oak Hill/Scottsmoor.
