Does anyone have a 686-5 DX? This is the non-fluted Power Port 6" mentioned on page 273 of the 3rd Ed. of the S.C. of S&W. Any owners have comment as to the 7 shot group within 1" at 25 yards? I saw a test target and it is impressive, enough to make me get my wallet out. :) Any pics? Thanks.

That is a sharp 586! I have never seen one with the unfluted cyl., though I have seen the 7 shot 586 from 2004.

I've got one...

I bought one locally, brand new not long after the factory stores closed.

When I was in the factory store in Piegon Forge TN before it closed, I saw that gun and wanted it, but they wanted *too much* for it.

I told my local dealer, and lo and behold, got some of the last of them from S&W's inventory as, I was told, they only 20 or so left.

I got to pick out the target. I think there is a posting of the spec sheet of this revolver somewhere in the archives that Smithnut did sometime back of now.

The problem that I had with mine, as many others did- the bottom piece of the Altamonte grips had a white plastic spacer in it, and soon it fell off. I tried calling Altamonte to get it fixed, but they stated that it was a special run and because of the problems, they wouldn't make any more of that grip. I just epoxyed mine back on straight- lucky for me. The store had three of them that the grips were apart in the box at the time! It's one of my two "safe queens."

I appreciate you response, as I visited that store myself a bit. I guess it was around late 99 I stared into their gun case a few times, but I do not remember this model because the 686 was not on my radar then. The spacer reminds me of an old Browning deer rifle, I like it. Do you happen to recall how much *too high* was back when ago?

Here are a few pics of my DX
