Any experience with Vit N340 in a 357?

I have a bottle of N340 that I'd like to try in my 5" 27-2 at the range.

I note that someone on the forum recommended 7.5 gr N340 for a 158 gr semi-jacketed flat poínt. (I'll be using a 158 gr HP).

Anyone have experience with this powder?

According to the VV chart numbers (http://www.lapua.com/fileadmin/user_upload/esitteet/VihtavuoriReloadingGuideEdition8.pdf) it seems to be a midrange powder similar to AA #5 in burn rate.

I use N340 quite a bit, and 7.5gr gives me about 1150fps behind a Remington 158gr SJHP out of my 5" 627PC. Be careful though, as this is approaching a maximum load with this powder (VihtaVuori says 7.7gr is max, at a COL = 1.575").

Personally, I find N340 better suited to lead bullets than the jacketed variety, especially so with Missouri Bullet's 158gr cast lead SWCs.

My lot of N340 is very close to Unique in performance. YMMV

Thanks for the advice RidgwayCO. I don't really want to push it too hard...I'll start with their minimum and work my way up.

You might find that you like the Vit powders. Just don't try to hot rod the 340. If you want to hot rod it go to N110. It's a fantastic powder for true magnum loads. The 340 is fine for the .38 special pressure range and a bit higher. Another thing is it burns cooler. A friend uses 320 and 340 for his IDPA loads. The reason is that the Vit powders don't heat up the gun as much. He can get through a 350 round practice session a good bit faster than with other powders. Not as much time waiting for the gun to cool off.
