Duplicating Buffalo Bore FBI Load

Fixed my links on Google Drive, so the original post with photos is available to download if needed. Link in post #103.

That looks like great expansion. I use HS-6 for my duplicate FBI Load too. I like it a lot and it produces accurate FBI loads.

Years ago, I read your posts here about HS-6 and .38 Special +P. You were right on! It's the best choice... although the current watery load data is totally inappropriate for HS-6. Loaded at traditional levels, it's wonderful. I also like a SPM primer with it.

An interesting artical pertinent to the subject at hand, if tou like history and a little background.

I for one would like to extend a sincere thank you to those who have made this a great, informative and interesting thread.

I discovered that I have about 200 Federal +p+ cases, some wcc +p+ cases and some of the Federal cases that are just dated but are, I strongly suspect, the LEO Only +p+ cases, about 500 in all and none are split. So, as soon as I get my Rimrock LSWCHP's Ill try my loads following closely what Ive read here. Ill probably start with the HS-6 but have several other honorable mentions here. I think I should have bought more than the 200 bullets I did buy.

I wish I had a "more suitable" gun, like a J-frame 357, all I have are a couple L frames. I just think it would be mucho fun trying them in something just a little more "authentic" for their time.

Anyway, thanks for a great thread.

Thanks for bringing this one back from the dead (or at least internet forum purgatory) one more time, jeeps. Great thread.

It is too bad the site doesn't support its own image repository. This thread is a great example of what happens when image files have to be hosted externally... sooner or later all those links break.

But good stuff, nevertheless. Reminds us that there truly is gold in them thar archives!
I had 20 plus years worth of images hosted on Fototime when they had a catastrophic failure and I lost all those images. :o

I'm glad you found this thread useful. Many of us tried hard to help with the replica FBI Load. I truly like using HS-6 for this application but I do suggest you use a Magnum primer with HS-6.

Good luck!

I don't use an image hosting site

If you upload your photos directly to this site they don't have to be put on an image host....................

I am sorry to hear that. I can only hope that you had them on another venue, storage... Whatever?

If it was just to access and share, that's an inconvenience: if you lost them forever, that's a tragedy!

Cheers!

P.S. That's why I don't have any trust nor dependence (hopefully?) upon the media/internet: they claim to be "totally secure"... Until the are forced to reveal to you that your so-called "secure data" was compromised!

Uh Oh, Zombie Thread Attack!!!

Gotcha. I have small magnums because one of my favorite 357 loads is h110 and a 135gr GoldDot and I always use mag primers. Small magnum primers arent common but sometimes you just need them.

Believe me, I can see that alot of work went into this thread, it shows and yes, I did find it very useful.

Is a GC bullet a necessity for duplication of this load if the bullet is cast harder?
I bought 500 of the GT Bullets 358429 HP, not with the intention of duplicating the load under discussion but thought since I have some similar bullets I would give it a shot. I certainly like how theyve performed in my 357's so far.

At this point, I don’t venture beyond Speer data for its 38 Spl +P 158 gr lead bullets using Power Pistol: 6.0 grs Power Pistol lit with CCI-500s using Speer (or Hornady) LRN yields from 1956 S&W Heavy Duty 4” Avg 995 fps, ES 40 SD 9.

I no longer reload 38-44 loads…I opt getting the same velocities using 357 Mag brass in my Ruger 357 Mag Blackhawk…7.0 grs BE-86 using 158 gr generic cast SWC is pretty good in 357 Mag brass: Avg 1121 fps ES 44 SD 12 (4 5/8” Ruger BH). This load is comparable statistically to the old 158 gr SWC/7.0 grs Unique load we used years ago but within 357 Mag pressures.

Good old thread. I've read it over several times previously, I think. Very good data and premise. I may have read somewhere that the BB load or maybe it was Underwood uses a slightly undersize (.355) or so bullet to keep pressures low.

Paper notebooks still work well and are far from outdated.

I like the Speer 158 gr LSWCHP especially when this thread started in 2009 but I have been loading it since 1979 or so.

‘If’ the above pictured Federal Box is designated XM9001 [ IIRC ] these were produced under Contract for the RCMP as a Duty Load when they were still issuing S&W M-10’s with a 5” standard ( skinny ) Barrel. From what I recall, it was an excellent Load, & confirmed the .38 Special +P could perform provided the right circumstances. Buffalo Bore I believe still produces an almost identical Load.

Best, Dom P.

Thanks for that. I'd heard they were issued +P loads.

Going O/T for a moment, a retired local RCMP officer told me they had to qualify out to 25 yards back then; now only to 15.

And going back many decades, we used to have a "BC Police" force who were issued N-frame revolvers marked "38 Special" but they were issued 38-44 loads. I had never heard of them until I saw a few so-marked revolvers for sale at a local gun show several years ago. Foolishly I didn't pony up the $1150 (~$805 USD at today's miserable exchange rate).

I just dont fully trust the chrono Im using, so I bought another and guess what, it more or less mirrors the first.

I seem to have lucked into three really nice loads along this vein but the tops all around is with Ramshot TrueBlue and frankly Im not surprised.
5.7gr with a HP358429GC in those +p+ Ni cases Im seeing stuff like this. Granted from a 4" tube but

Accuracy is on the order of 3" @ 25yds from a standing two hand hold.
Performance from a shorter barrel would suffer a bit of course but looking at brass and my fairly extensive experience with this powder leads me to believe that therr is more to be had from this powder. Ive used it with great results with TB in just about every caliber Ive loaded with it. I dont know if there is a better powder for 9mm. It really makes 357 come alive too and the numbers above, the SD and ES are not an anomaly, those are the norm with this powder, theyre actually usually lower.
PP was another standout but I need to order more bullets to solidify some things.
